BTSCelebs Opinion: SHINee in Chicago

SHINee

SHINee’s coming!

As many of you know, I have been a SHINee supporter since 2009. I think the guys in the group are super talented, and I love hearing positive news about their career and personal lives.

When I first learned that the SMTown singers were coming to the Rosemont Theatre on May 8th, I was ecstatic! It has been an incredibly long time coming. I’ll bet when they finally come, they will fall in love with the truly warm and friendly atmosphere of the Midwest. Stars who visit Chi-town always return!

Bravo to SM Entertainment for finally introducing SHINee to the Chicagoland area. I hope they consider making an official USA music debut in the near future.

[Interview] 5 Questions with Hollyn

Hollyn_photo1_LeeSteffen

BTSCelebs: Who is Hollyn, and why did you choose this stage name?

If you know nothing about me, or have no idea what I’m about, know this. “Hollyn” is real. Everything I write and sing about relates to my life in a genuine and honest way. I wanted to create a brand for myself to have a fresh start and the ability to have a specific, unique sound that attracts all people. This is music that is from my soul, so I want to have a name that shows a side of me no one has seen before.

What inspired you to pursue music?

I was always inspired to do music. No one had to tell me that I loved it. Pretty sure I came into the world singing, at least that’s what my parents say. Haha! Music is my passion, and I knew I wanted to do something with it from a young age, but the last couple years really have determined what I’ve been called to do on a professional level.

If you had a chance to duet with any current recording artist, who would it be?

If I could do a duet with anyone, I would pick John Mayer.

What surprises do you have planned for fans this year?

I’ve got a lot of things up my sleeve this year for my fans, but mainly a new album is in the works! Super excited to be working on a full length. Thankful for everyone who’s been so supportive!

Movie Review: The Divergent Series: Allegiant

12489427_797273500399376_561767033120618252_o

The world opens up for those who are BRAVE.

Tris, Four, Caleb, Christina and Peter finally discover the desolate and dangerous world beyond the wall. The crew is literally in awe with their new surroundings that kind of resembles Mars. Everyone quickly becomes acquainted with the new lifestyle outside the wall, but they learned not everything is as perfect as it seems.

“Allegiant” was one shocking action film. It supersedes the previous two films by being almost 100% action and mystery. Tris and Four’s love scenes are mostly put on hold as they have a couple’s quarrel and fight to save the people of Chicago once again.

If you thought Jeanine was scary, you will be blown away by the leader (aka Director David) of the new world.

Honestly, I have a love-hate relationship with the film. I love that there was less romance and more action, but I feel it was a little too intense. (Especially the shower and exterior scenes in the new world) However, the high-tech gadgets and breathtaking interior design of the headquarters drew me in.

I recommend you see “Allegiant” if you are dying to see a hardcore action film with coveted high-tech gadgets. We all need bullet proof mini-drones that point out threatening targets.

[Interview] Dancers Jameson Keating and Derek Drilon Reveal Desire to Perform with Newsies and Coldplay

From left to right: Jameson Keating and Derek Drilon

From left to right: Jameson Keating and Derek Drilon

On Friday, BTSCelebs was given the golden opportunity to interview Joffrey Ballet dancers Jameson Keating and Derek Drilon in the Joffrey Tower in Chicago

They were two handsome gentlemen with a refreshing zest for life. During the interview, Derek radiated by being patient and humble, while Jameson shined with his openness and enthusiasm about his craft. The two dancers’ personalities were as different as night and day, but their differences made them special.

Following the guys’ amazing  “Winning Works 2016” performance, BTSCelebs learned a little more about the talented dancers and their journey to Joffrey.

BTSCelebs: Who is Derek Drilon and Jameson Keating?

Jameson: I’m an aspiring professional ballet dancer currently with the Studio Company of the  Joffrey Ballet.

Derek: I’m currently with the Joffrey Studio Company. This is my first year. I come from Washington State.

What piqued your interest in dance?

Jameson: Growing up, I started off as a martial artist (Taekwondo when I was four years-old). But, my body was very uneven, my right side was alot stronger than my left. When I was about 10 years-old, my instructor said I should look into ballet classes to get my balance better and even out my muscles. From there, I started taking classes and fell in love with it. It sort of transferred form martial arts to ballet. Now, my whole career is just ballet.

Derek: My mom as a ballet school back in Washington State. I just grew up there and went everyday.  When I was about ten, I started taking classes and fell in love with it. I kept on going. Now, I’m here.

Tell us about your journey to the Joffrey Ballet.

Jameson: I was with Ballet West last year, and I got very late notice that I wasn’t going to be welcomed back there for a another year. Usually they let you know in February. But, I had my meeting in April because the director wasn’t sure. I was frantically auditioning for companies. I almost ended up going to Nevada Ballet Theatre in Las Vegas. One of my hometown friends in Santa Barbara (who teaches at State Street Ballet” said, “you should send a video to Joffrey, I can get a word in for you.” So, I did. Alexei had me come in for the summer and he said, “you can be in the studio company”.  That’s how I got here.

Derek: I’m from a very small studio. That’s where I was up until last year. This is the only place I auditioned for. But, I’m really glad it turned out the way it did because Anna and Alexei have been great towards me. They have let me guest during Nutcracker season so we can go to different studios. They also let me compete and represent Joffrey. That turned out to be great.

“The Sound of Music”, “Peter Pan”, “The Wiz” and “Grease” have all been resurrected in live TV broadcasts. If you had the opportunity to dance in a classic play, which one would it be and why?

Jameson: I love “Newsies”. That’s like one of my favorites. It’s a great one. It is a Broadway show, but it was also a Disney movie with Christian Bale when he was really young. It’s just so much like boys dancing. Whenever I saw that when I was younger, I was like “yeah, those guys look super cool!” It’s set in the 1920s. I like that time period as far as like costumes go, and I think the story line is cool and the dancing. …it helped push my interest more towards ballet. So, “Newsies” for me.

Derek: I’m probably gonna say “Peter Pan” because he can fly. The one I understand the most.

Which current recording artist would you love to tour with?

Derek: I’m gonna say Coldplay.

Jameson: There is this guy from Ventura, California. His name is Super Duper Kyle, and he is like a hip hop rapper kind of guy. Super in love with his music right now. I really want to choreograph for him. It would be really cool if I could go on tour with him and choreograph routines to do during his shows. That would be awesome for me. Shout Out to my boy Super Duper Kyle for sure!

You both did a very good job at Winning Works 2016. How did it feel to be apart of the special event this year?

Jameson: Thank you. Pretty cool experience getting to work with people like Jeffery Cirio, getting to meet a bunch of new choreographers you haven’t seen work from before. It’s amazing to work with people like Wayne McGregor or Christopher Wheeldon  really famous names. I like working with new people because you get fresh, new ideas. You get to be apart of the process of making the piece. You have something set specifically on you.

Derek: I really enjoyed being part of it. All of the really unique and different works that came out of this year’s Winning Works. It was nice being apart of something new.

What are your plans for the 2016-2017 season?

Jameson: Right now, It’s audition season for me. I have 5 or 6 auditions coming up. I hope to stay at Joffrey, because it’s fantastic here. I’ve got quite a few lined up so we’ll see where that goes.

Derek:  I’m still auditioning, but I really do enjoy it here at Joffrey.

JuliannaDeering_DressedforDeathThe Spring 2016 reading list begins!

BTSCelebs will be reviewing  Julianna Deering’s newest murder mystery “Dressed For Death”.  After recieving the book just days ago, I’m currently on chapter two. I’m very curious to see which way this book will go.

In this edition, Drew and Madeline attend a friend’s Regency Era themed week-long house party, and apparently tragedy strikes yet again. I hope Drew is able to solve the mystery this time without anyone close to him getting hurt.

Stay Tuned for the complete review in the coming weeks!

Dance Review: The Joffrey Ballet’s “Winning Works 2016”

Capter1Chapter6_JeffreyCirioBTSCelebs was given the golden opportunity to review yet another stunning “Winning Works.

Today’s performances were Alexei Kremnev’s “Coco + Igor”,  Jeffery Cirio’s “Chapter 1, chapter 6”, Mariana Olivera’s “Death and the Maiden”, and Christian Denice’s “Urgence” all held their own charm. I love the chemistry the couples had in the the first two performances. The use of appealing symmetry in “Coco + Igor” was very pleasing to the eye, while “Chapter 1, chapter 6” had such a catchy beat it literally made me feel like I was at a concert. Chiro took the entire audience on an emotional journey from absolute joy to unexpected melancholy. His piece ended way too early. I would like to experience more of Jeffery Chiro’s work in the future.

The one drawback was the dark and sadness surrounding Olivera’s piece. Watching “Death and the Maiden” was disturbing and kind of brought down the mood of the entire “Winning Works 2016”. I know every story can’t have a happy ending, but the entire piece is soley focused on death.

Nonetheless, all of the dancers did a fantastic job. Congrats to them all on a job well done!

Winning Works 2016 concludes its two-day engagement tomorrow at 3PM at the Edlis Neeson Theater in the Museum of Contemporary Art.
