“When We Blinked” is a mirror and a learning experience on paper.
Stephanie Mack’s newest novel explores relationships and what truly matters in life. Characters Seraphina and Connor had a picture perfect marriage until porn and miscarriages shattered their hope in each other and a future. The story is spilt between their viewpoints, while they navigate parenthood, therapy and new romantic relationships.
Romance is still the star of When We Blinked,” because Seraphina decides to try a new dating app called Blinde. Little does she know, her ex-husband Conner is also encouraged to “get back out there” and try Blinde himself. The dating app allows users to get to know potential soulmates without ever seeing them. Seraphina instantly connects with a guy named Jack. Connor joins the app under the alias Jack, and the pair form an unshakable bond. Around the same time, Seraphina also has interest in a rich young colleague Graham Hamilton, while dealing with lingering feelings for her ex-husband Connor. Let the romance games begin!
While love is in the air, the main couple is co-parenting their emotionally scarred daughter Coco and facing past demons that destroyed their marriage in the first place. They make great strides to maintaining their mental health by attending regular therapy sessions. The healing gradually happens during the course of the book, and we see the positive future each character chooses because of it.
“When We Blinked” is a raw and honest look at life and relationships. This contemporary romance is best suited for couples who can easily relate to the main characters’ struggles and learn from their mistakes. It’s easy to read and be fully immersed in the story.
