BTSCelebs’ Interview with The Second City’s Jack C. Newell – Part 1

JackC.Newell_06272014

This week, BTSCelebs’ virtually interviewed the Head of the Second City Training Centers TV, Film and Digital program, Jack C. Newell. Chicago‘s Second City headquarters is embarking on its Summer 2014 semester and he took time to expound on the details of the program and Second City in the Midwest.

BTSCelebs: What sparked your interest in comedy?

Jack Newell: I have no idea. I have come to believe that you (I) really have no choice in the matter. I don’t think I chose comedy. I don’t think I choose the films I make. I think comedy for me, and for a lot of people, is a compulsion or a way of life. It’s not like I was walking down the street one day and saw an advertisement for Comedy (TM) and was like – huh, that looks interesting maybe I’ll do Comedy!

So… that doesn’t really answer your question.

I express myself through comedy because life should be laughed at, not like some idiot laughing – but making someone laugh allows you to have a conversation or creates an intimacy (with the audience or another person) that might not have happened otherwise.

Why did Second City decide to take root in Chicago?

SC_facade_neon06272014

Well, if you look at the actual history of The Second City it kind of grew organically from the early days as the Compass Players at UofC and then folks from that group creating The Second City, in the early days, as I understand it, they were just making theater. They were people who, most of the time, had day jobs and then at night got up on stage and expressed themselves. As time has gone on, and The Second City became a “thing” we have put all these labels on it. But, what I think is great about it is that it was organic and grew on its own and that’s why it’s so well known. In a lot of ways, the independent film scene in Chicago is very similar. People are making their films, shorts, web series, etc. – they are people who have day jobs and at night they go out and express themselves in film/video.

Your Training Center is launching a new program, what will the TV, Film, and Digital program offer Chicagoans?

Chicago_Office_06272014

I think what the TV, Film & Digital Program can offer Chicagoans (and, people world-wide) is in a couple of different ways.
Actors and improvisors who are excelling on Chicago stages can take our classes to learn how to adapt their stagecraft for the screen. Stage and screen are two different mediums – everyone knows that. What we can provide is knowledge, practice, and guidance to help improvisors and actors excel in both mediums. One small, overly simplistic example is that on the stage if you want to take the focus of the audience you would move from upstage to downstage. Downstage being closer to the audience, and they can see you better. Usually a Shakespeare soliloquy will happen in the downstage area. In film, if we want to give focus to an actor, the director places the camera in a close up or medium close up. I had a teacher in film school tell me, “on the stage you walk into a close up. In film, you cut to a close up.” Ideas like that help the actor/improvisor better understand how to use the language of the art form to express themselves.
Writers , directors, producers who are looking to dive into the world of film, video, web series, shorts, TV, etc. – we will have classes that give them practice, guidance, and in-the-field experience shooting to better understand the filmmaking process.
Again, in overly simplistic terms – on the stage the script is king. You don’t ad-lib Shakespeare or Mamet. In film, the script is a blueprint. I always like to say that you can buy a copy of Hamlet, read it, enjoy it, and have essentially experienced Hamlet. No one does that with film scripts, because the script is a tool for the filmmakers, but it’s not the end all be all. Screenplays / scripts live in this weird purgatory that they almost aren’t even screenplays until they are turned into films. It’s a “if a tree falls in the woods” sort of thing.

Will any former alumni teach the classes?

Yes. Definitely, but I am not currently at liberty to say more.

Mr. Newell answers the following questions in part 2 of our interview:

Tell us about some of the people you knew who started in Second City that rose to fame.

Other than comedy, will the new program focus on different genres of film – drama, adventure, action?

You had your films screened at several film festivals, what was your favorite festival and tell us about an unforgettable moment there?

What Jack C. Newell project can we expect to see in the near future?

[Book Review] Jessica Dotta’s “Mark Of Distinction”

MarkofDistinction_JessicaDotta_05292014

Jessica Dotta’s second novel in the Price Of Privilege Trilogy, “Mark Of Distinction”, was much better than the first book. I was pleasantly surprised by the regal surroundings described. Ms. Dotta perfectly depicted a common girl’s rise into the upper-class.

Her main character Julia spends the beginning of the book alone in a large estate owned by her rich father. His political status has allowed him to enjoy life among fellow wealthy British people in the 1800s. However, she does not live in his sphere until she is around 18 years old due to unfortunate circumstances.

In her father’s home, she finds a safe haven from the deviant Mr. Macy, until Macy hounds her in her father’s care. This book could have easily been the conclusion to Julia’s tough journey thru the ranks of England. It ends on a very high note. Nonetheless, her happy ending obviously comes at a price with the third installment (“Price Of Privilege”) releasing in the Spring of 2015.

Kim Hyun Joong wins again!

After two weeks of voting, the majority of you wrote in “Inspiring Generation” for the other option. It was an unexpected feat, but KHJ’s KBS historical drama proved to be a fan favorite.

[Interview] Actor Tyler Young: My Upcoming Short Films Are “The Last Hour” and “The Ballad of Ronnie and Clive”

TylerYoung_TheAvatars_06192014

The second half of BTSCelebs’ interview with Tyler starts now….

BTSCelebs: You play J.P. in Disney Channel Europe’s “The Avatars”. Tell us about the audition process and how you landed your big role.

Tyler Young: I auditioned for the role via tape from my agency, Gray Talent Group, who have been my hardworking agents for the past two years. About a month after my tape was sent in and I had nearly forgotten about the project, I received a callback for the series, which I attended a few days later in New York City. I went straight from my flight to the audition where I was greeted by all the other hopefuls. One by one they called us in to read with other actors and slowly asked people to leave or stay after their audition (beyond nerve racking!!!). I was asked to stay after reading the same scene with about 10 different girls until finally, they asked that I come back the following day for an extensive callback session. At the second day of callbacks, they had me read with a handful of different guys who would be playing my co-stars on the show, and finally it was narrowed down to about 9 of us for 5 principal roles. They told us they would let us know the following Monday, however, that night as I was out with friends and some of my future cast mates, I got a call from my agent in Chicago telling me that I booked the show! I was beyond overwhelmed to learn that they needed me in europe in just 3 short weeks… but when duty calls…

What is it like filming in Spain? Do you have any memorable moments?

It. Was. Crazy. Shooting in a studio in Madrid while the series “took place”, and often referenced New York City, was an odd but hilarious circumstance. I also don’t speak Spanish (I took french in school), so the language barrier was certainly a struggle at times. We all had to learn how to use non-verbal communication very well in order to work with the Spanish director and crew, though we somehow managed to get by in our own weird little ways. Of course, the Spanish team spoke decent English, but it was a give and take of us actors learning some Spanish and them learning some more English. I probably learned more Spanish curse words and phrases on that set than I could have ever learned from taking a Spanish class… 😉

You filmed some commercials in the USA, what was your favorite commercial? Why was this particular one so special to you?

I did a live, filmed project for American Greeting’s Just Wink greeting cards at Summerfest in Milwaukee, Wisconsin a few summers back. I played a “mustache man”. I literally danced around and interacted with festival goers while decked out in 1930’s barber apparel adorned with a giant mustache head (yes, you read that correctly). There was also a giant cat, a lemonade girl, a purple unicorn and a ninja. The costumes and characters were outlandish representations of the characters on the cards and we jumped out and surprised people when they looked at a card pertaining to our character. It was certainly one of the weirder things I’ve ever done, but I had a blast.

How do you unwind after a busy week?

I love to keep my head clear by running, and I also try to keep a regular sleep schedule to maintain sanity.

What projects should we expect to see you in the near future?

I recently shot a short film called The Last Hour by an upcoming Chicago filmmaker, Philip Giancola, where I played a teenage runaway living on the streets. I also just wrapped a short film called The Ballad of Ronnie and Clive as part of Acting Studio Chicago’s cinema lab with director Stephen Cone. Both projects should hopefully be available for viewing in the near future.

[Interview] “The Avatars” Actor Tyler Young: “It’s My Dream to Work alongside Meryl Streep, Mariann Mayberry”

TylerYoung_06182014

Meet Tyler!

Chicago actors continue to spread their wings all the way to Europe! “The Avatars” actor Tyler Young is yet another amazing gem in the Midwest. This rising talent has taken his humble beginnings in theatre and commercial work all the way to Spain!

Here is part one of BTSCelebs’ exclusive interview with Tyler Young:

BTSCelebs: Who is Tyler Young?

Tyler Young: Way to get all existential on me for the first question! I don’t quite know how to answer this one so i’ll let the following questions answer for me.

What influenced you to pursue a career in the entertainment industry?

I knew from probably the 4th grade that I wanted to pursue a career as an actor, though, I had absolutely no idea what that entailed or how to achieve it. I saw the kids on TV shows and in plays and thought to myself, “that’s what I want to be doing!”. From there on out, I subconsciously began my pursuit into this crazy business.

Imagine you are cast in your dream film. What is the name of the movie and who is the actor you would like to play alongside?

I’d love to be in any film that successfully presents characters and situations in honest, relatable and compelling ways. In particular, and to achieve this, it’d be ideal to work with a director who understands how to work with actors in an effective and approachable manner–someone like local Chicago director, Stephen Cone, for example. I always say it’s my dream to work alongside someone such as Meryl Streep because, well, she’s just the best. It would be the greatest learning experience to witness her process while undertaking challenging roles. I’d also love to work with an actor such as Mariann Mayberry , a notable ensemble member at Steppenwolf Theatre company, who delivers incredible stage performances that I believe would translate tremendously on film.

What is your ideal movie genre to star in? (example: comedy, action, etc..)

My ideal film would be one that challenges and transcends genre–utilizing man facets to create a dynamic, original concept.

Tyler will answer the following questions in part 2 of our interview:

You play J.P. in Disney Channel Europe’s “The Avatars”. Tell us about the audition process and how you landed your big role.

What is it like filming in Spain? Do you have any memorable moments?
