Theatre Review: “Across The Pond”

“Across The Pond” is real life.

The Joffrey Ballet premiered UK choreographers Andrew McNicol, Liam Scarlett and Andrea Walker’s art in the Auditorium Theatre on April 24th. “Yonder Blue” (McNicol), “Vespertine” (Scarlett) and “Home” (Walker) equally showed the struggles and love stories of people from all walks of life.

Victoria Jaiani paired up with dancers Rory Hohenstein and Alberto Velazquez for “Yonder Blue” and “Vespertine”. The sexy chemistry was undeniable when she danced with her partner in each piece. The entire ensemble in both performances accomplished their mission with seamless moves. All the dancers were perfectly synchronized. You could feel the emotional yearning between people and their need for the environment around them in Yonder Blue, while “Vespertine” mixed elegance of the classic Baroque era with the modern-day.

Passionate love was shown in the immigrant inspired “Home”. The group of dancers around a couple seem to illustrate the cold and mundane world of conformity. The main pair stood out as a pillar among the citizens unaware of their existence.

The pros and cons of “Across The Pond” are simple. The pros are the music, outfits and graceful dancing. The dancers deserve all the praise for their hard work and dedication. The choreographers need to be applauded for their work as well. The only con I can state is the intense romance on-stage. I still feel it would be best to shy away from passionate love scenes of any kind. “Across The Pond” felt like it was more appropriate for adults rather than children, and I would love for every single one of the performances to be enjoyed by all ages.

“Across The Pond” will run through May 5, 2019 at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago, IL.

In a set of photos, the happy couple showed off their winter wonderland, as well as, a glimpse into their first helicopter ride and stepping on the glass floor in Calgary Tower.

Yesterday, veteran actor Joey Lawrence had some fun on social media by honoring his furry best friend. Joey shared a brief message stressing the importance of caring for pets and praising his own precious dog.

Check out that wonderful message and cute video clip below:

[Opinion] What Do I Think of the English Version of SF9’s Enough?

Last week, K-Pop boy band SF9 released an unique version of their latest single “Enough”. I thoroughly enjoyed the Korean and Japanese versions, but I was completely taken aback by the newest release. In the short YouTube video, the award-winning group showed off superior dance moves while singing entirely in English. After seeing the MV a few times, I have to commend the guys! Their English pronunciation is quite good. I believe the English lyrics breathed new life into a song worthy of topping the charts.  There were a few words I had a little difficulty understanding during the first viewing, but that rings true for any mainstream song. Some phrases are suppose to be sung in a way to invoke emotion more than anything else.

I loved SF9’s English edition, and I hope they continue to release songs in my native language for years to come.

Check out the melodic video below:

You can catch SF9 on tour this Spring in the USA and Europe! From April 19th – May 12th, they are scheduled to make stops in Chicago, New York, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Moscow, Warsaw, Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris and London.

The Joffrey Ballet Premieres Highly Anticipated “Across The Pond” on April 24

“Across The Pond” lands in Chicago this Spring! British Choreographers Andrew Walker, Andrew McNicol and Liam Scarlett will illustrate their expertise through the piecesHOME,” “Yonder Blue” and “Vespertine”. An official press release (from The Silverman Group) explaining the upcoming program was released yesterday. Ten performances will run through May 5, 2019 at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago, IL.

Inspiring young people helped create “HOME”. It “is a story of strength, resilience, and the nature of belonging. Through his signature fusion of dance styles, Walker explores what home means—within ourselves, our relationships, and our country.”

A modern piece of literature aided in the production of “Yonder Blue”. “McNicol draws inspiration from Siri Hustvedt’s illuminating book A Plea for Eros. Hustvedt describes “Yonder” as a word that shifts and moves, implying distance between one place and another. The word “Blue” similarly holds multiple associations—honesty and melancholy. Both words encapsulate the idea of distance, whether it be related to nature or people.”

The classic Baroque period brought “Vespertine” to life. It is “inspired by the music of Arcangelo Corelli, resulting in an abstract ballet that evokes classicism and athleticism all in one, set amidst a scenic display of custom chandeliers.”

[Exclusive Photos] Renée Fleming’s 25th Anniversary Concert

On Saturday, celebrated American soprano Renée Fleming enjoyed over two hours of performances for her 25th Anniversary Concert. The one-night-only event honored her unique commitment and contribution to the musical world. According to an official press release from The Silverman Group and Lyric Opera of Chicago, “Cherished operatic and musical highlights captivated the crowd for more than two hours, including several from operas in which Fleming has starred at Lyric over the years.” She even performed several well known operatic pieces like “Porgi amor” (Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro) “Song to the Moon” (Dvořák’s Rusalka) and ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone” (Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Carousel).

The press release described the evening this way, “The full-house audience enjoyed unforgettable performances by sopranos Renée Fleming and Sondra Radvanovsky, tenor Lawrence Brownlee, baritone Quinn Kelsey, and bass-baritones Eric Owens and Christian Van Horn, along with artists from The Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center. Conductor Patrick Summers led the Lyric Opera Orchestra. The concert was hosted by acclaimed actor and musician Tituss Burgess, who delighted the audience by singing ‘In A Sentimental Mood’…. Fleming also performed a song from a new role she is preparing, singing ‘Fable,’ from The Light in the Piazza. She announced from the stage that she will be returning to the Lyric Opera House in December, in a new production of the musical.”

Who designed Ms. Fleming’s exquisite gowns? Carolina Herrera created the navy tulle gown, while Vivienne Westwood made the rose-gold sequined one. She was adorned in jewelry by Ann Ziff for Tamsin Z.

An exclusive Gala at The Ritz-Carlton directly followed the concert.

3 Korean Dramas I’m Excited to Watch This Year

actress Kim So Hyun

K-dramas are in full swing this year with a truckload of amazing K-dramas. I’ve been busy sampling past and present shows while anxiously waiting for my new favorites to arrive. Currently, I’m trying out Park Jinyoung’s “He Is Psychometric”. The first two episodes appear to be a mixture of melodrama and comedy, but I can’t say it’s in my top 10. The melodramatic (and crime) scenes are more gruesome than I expected them to be. Nonetheless, there are a few TV shows I’m excited about watching as the year progresses. The first two premiere next month, and the last one premieres at a later date.

Take a look at my top 3 now.

Choi Si Won’s “My Fellow Citizens”

This KBS2 comedy/crime show is self-explanatory with its recent trailer on Kocowa. This  action-packed series is scheduled to premiere on April 1st.

Ji Soo’s “My First First Love” (April 18, 2019)

Discovering the meaning of love for the very first time is what 5 people in their 20s encounter in this Netflix series. They also promise to form irreplaceable friendship bonds and start dreaming big for their future.

Kim So Hyun’s “Love Alarm” (2019)

Can you imagine an app telling you if your secret crush likes you back? This fun NetFlix series is all about a rookie developer who creates a special app that can do just that. Of course, Kim So Hyun will be caught up in a coveted love triangle with actors Jung Ga Ram and Song Kang.

I’m looking forward to the coming months!
