Opera Review: Lyric’s “The Barber of Seville”

The Lyric Opera of Chicago had a terrific opening night!

BTSCelebs was given the opportunity to attend last night’s performance of “The Barber of Seville”. This delightful Italian classic came to life through Lyric’s wonderful adaptation. From the flawless singing to the hilarious acting, Lyric’s production is absolute perfection! Stars Marianne Crebassa and Lawrence Brownlee literally make you believe they are the hopelessly in love couple Rosina and Count Almaviva, while Adam Plachetka excels as the meddling barber/matchmaker Figaro. Alessandro Corbelli is absolutely hilarious as Rosina’s elderly guardian Bartolo, and Krzysztof BÄ…czyk’s Lyric debut as the pious music instructor Basilio was unforgettable.

As many fans know, “The Barber of Seville” is centered on Rosina and Count Almaviva’s lighthearted romance. It was love at first sight for Rosina and the Count. After their first chance meeting, he serenades her outside her home, until Figaro concocts a plan to sneak him into her house to see her again. The two men’s wild journey begins as the Count impersonates a soldier and a music instructor to secretly meet his love. Little did they know, the fight against her elderly suitor Bartolo will prove to be the biggest challenge of all.  Thankfully, the Count’s monumental secret is his most powerful weapon.

I can’t discredit any of the performers in this opera production! Everyone gives 100%, and I applaud them all. Director Rob Ashford, conductor Sir Andrew Davis, chorus master Michael Blackset, set designer Scott Pask, costume designer Catherine Zuber and more all deserve standing ovations. Bravo!

BTSCelebs highly recommends “The Barber of Seville” for all ages. You can catch the remaining seven performances on October 2, 5, 10, 13, 18, 21 and 27  at The Lyric Opera House in Chicago, IL.

BTSCelebs sends a special thanks to The Silverman Group and The Lyric Opera of Chicago for the press passes.

[Interview] The Joffrey Ballet’s Jane Eyre, Amanda Assucena, Promises a “Fearless” Season

On October 16th, The Joffrey Ballet plans to bring one of my favorite classics to life!

“Jane Eyre” is the story of a girl who has to overcome unbelievable hardship to find her own happy ending. Following a terrible childhood, Jane lands a job as a governess for a cold and mysterious man that just happens to be her soulmate. The  astonishing love story has many twists and turns that requires an exceptionally talented person to portray. Joffrey found that talent in dancer Amanda Assucena. Recently, BTSCelebs was given the opportunity to interview Amanda and learn a little more about her and the exciting story that awaits us.

BTSCelebs: Who is Amanda Assucena?

Amanda Assucena: I’m a dancer with The Joffrey Ballet in Chicago. In my seven seasons with the Company, I have performed the lead roles in several ballets such as Romeo & Juliet, Cinderella, Swan Lake, Giselle, and Anna Karenina.

What attracted you to Chicago’s dance scene?

I have noticed that the Chicago dance scene is incredibly diverse and supportive of each other. There is always a new performance to go watch and new works by different companies that inspire me to keep exploring my range of movement.

Tell us about one unforgettable moment during your very first performance with The Joffrey Ballet.

My very first performance with the Joffrey was Le Sacre du Printemps, with choreography by Nijinsky and music by Stravinsky. We were collaborating with one of the best orchestras in the world, The Cleveland Orchestra. I remember the first rehearsal of the piece with a full orchestra, and there was a section of the ballet where I could sit and watch the dancers and musicians feeding off each other’s energy, and creating something incredibly powerful on that stage. At that moment I told myself to never take a single day of the amazing job I have for granted. Not everyone gets to live incredible stories and listen to amazing live music on a daily basis, and that’s what this career and the Joffrey has given me.

What was your knowledge of “Jane Eyre” before this adaptation?

I knew about the love story and that it was big part of literature, but not much more than that. I am really enjoying the process of getting deeper into the woman that is Jane Eyre.

Do you share any similarities with Jane Eyre in real life? How do you differ from the character?

I think Jane and I are very similar in our ambitions. She is someone that knows her potential and knows it takes hard work and determination to achieve your goals. We differ in the sense that I believe Jane is someone who is very sure of who she is and how she deals with situations. She goes through a whole lot of trauma throughout her life, and that shapes her into a strong woman very early on. I believe I am still constantly learning new things about who I am and who I want to be.

What should the audience anticipate from this upcoming production?

The audience can expect an incredible journey of a woman overcoming obstacles and remaining true to herself.

If you could pick one word to describe Joffrey’s 2019-2020 season, what would it be and why?

Fearless. Why? Come and see for yourself!

“Jane Eyre” will run for 10 performances October 16th-27th at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago.

“Jane Eyre” Premieres in Chicago Next Month

Photo Credit: Cheryl Mann – featuring dancers Amanda Assucena and Greig Matthews.

On October 16th, The Joffrey Ballet opens its last season at the Auditorium Theatre with the unique adaptation of the classic romance “Jane Eyre”. Next fall, Joffrey makes the grand move to the Lyric Opera House.

According to an official press release from The Silverman Group, famed choreographer and artistic director Cathy Marston is working hard with Joffrey’s talented dancers to bring Chicago an unforgettable show. The beloved Chicago Philharmonic , conducted by Scott Speck (Music Director of The Joffrey Ballet) will perfectly perform Philip Feeney’s score.

Marston’s highly anticipated version of Charlotte Brontë’s “Jane Eyre” promises to combine theater and dance effortlessly. “This production of Jane Eyre challenges the idea of a classic ballet heroine. After a difficult upbringing, Jane becomes the Governess for the mysterious Mr. Rochester, discovering the struggles of society’s expectations. With stirring choreography and a captivating Victorian design, this avant – garde ballet shows that love can conquer any obstacle,” the press release states.

“‘Cathy is breaking glass ceilings in the ballet world, and with Jane Eyre she creates an unconventional heroine whose trials and passions are beautifully articulated through choreography,’ said Ashley Wheater, The Mary B. Galvin Artistic Director of the Joffrey . ‘We are thrilled to bring her adaptation of Jane Eyre to Chicago for the first time following its successful North American debut with American Ballet Theatre this past June.'”

“Jane Eyre” will only run for 10 performances October 16th-27th at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago.

[One Night Only] “The Divine Plan” Hits Theaters This November

Credit: Fathom Events and Nexus Media

Flashback in time to the Cold War Era with famed director Robert Orlando’s new film “The Divine Plan”. According to a recent press release from Collide Media, the powerful Fathom Events and Nexus Media documentary promises to amaze moviegoers on November 6.

What is “The Divine Plan: Reagan, John Paul II and the End of the Cold War” all about?

The press release explains it this way, “the feature-length documentary unveils both the religious and political history that shaped the passions of these two world leaders [President Reagan and Pope John Paul II]. By probing deep into the shadows of the Cold War, Orlando and those interviewed expose events that support a vivid and uncommon mission during this fragile chapter of human history. THE DIVINE PLAN blurs the lines of conventional documentary film making as the scenes play out through a combination of interviews with historians and experts, audio and video archives, and illustrations that blend graphic novel illustrations with cold war era Soviet propaganda.”
