Book Review: Francine Rivers’ “The Masterpiece”

“We’re all God’s masterpiece, created anew in Christ.” (a Grace Moore quote)

In Francine Rivers’s upcoming novel “The Masterpiece”, devout atheist Roman Velasco has a near-death experience that opens his eyes to the afterlife, while his religious assistant, Grace Moore, is determined to follow the straight and narrow path to righteousness after making her share of mistakes. The long story places a spotlight on their abusive childhoods, broken young adult years and their grim outlook on a possible future together. We discover along the way that while Grace’s best friends Shanice and Ashley are her anchors… one unknowingly contributes to her downfall. Roman’s longtime mentor Jasper and rival turned friend Brian help keep him grounded on his tumultuous journey.

I have a love hate relationship with “The Masterpiece”. I love that the author uses such a shocking experience as dragging Roman into hell and having Jesus Christ save him as a means of conversion. I feel like that could really speak volumes to non-believers. Sometimes, no amount of words can reach people, but meeting demons and Jesus Christ face to face would no doubt make things much clearer. On the flipside, I found some sections of the book a little too raw and gritty for my taste. There are almost 500 pages in this best-selling author’s book, so I’m sure each reader is bound to have different views on the novel as a whole.

See for yourself when the “The Masterpiece” releases in February 2018.

A Possible Way to Drastically Reduce The Rate of Suicide in South Korea

In my opinion, the worst has happened. SHINee is my number one band in K-Pop. No other group can measure up to them in my eyes. Like many ShaWols, I’m still heartbroken over Jonghyun’s recent passing.

Since I became a fan of South Korean entertainment in 2004, I’ve seen several celebrities  fall prey to suicide. Stars Lee Eun Ju, Jeong Da Bin, Choi Jin Sil, Park Yong Ha and Jang Ja Yeon are several of the many who tragically ended their own lives. In light of recent events, I want to suggest something that I think may help slow down the epidemic. Like the United States of America, I encourage South Korea to base their country on Christian principles. We Americans have our share of problems (history, crime etc), but our common thread is love. Love is how Americans continue to heal year after year. Try studying the Holy Bible, praying regularly and meet up with fellow believers as often as possible. I understand no one can force anyone to convert, but all South Korean citizens deserve the right to be exposed to positivity and decide for themselves.

Unfortunately, nothing can completely eliminate fear and sadness, but Christianity gives believers hope to face tomorrow and a purpose to live each day. According to the statistics, more than half of the population claims no religion whatsoever. Maybe that is a main contributing factor to the feeling of hopelessness and loneliness.

Please consider my words and hope for a drastic reduction in yearly suicides. God bless South Korea.

SHINee’s Jonghyun has died

I’m heartbroken by the shocking news that a member of my favorite K-Pop band passed away today. Kim Jong Hyun, who was 27 years-old, died on the way to the hospital after emergency responders found him unconscious.

He was one of the most gifted singers of SHINee and loved all over the world. I know I will miss him terribly. Condolences to the SHINee members, his family, friends and fellow ShaWols around the world. May God comfort us all.

Rest in peace, Jonghyun. We will always love you.

Movie Review: “A Winter Wedding”

“A Winter Wedding” is the go-to movie for couples in love.

In UP tv‘s Christmas Day film, stars Andrea Bowen (Hallie) and Nick Bateman (Lucas) portray a newly engaged couple who are planning the wedding of a century in Mexico. Things quickly go awry when their booked event gets a surprise cancellation. The bride-to-be is faced with the difficult decision of marrying the man of her dreams ASAP at his family’s home or waiting a year to fulfill her childhood dream wedding. On the road to their nuptials, everyone begins the bonding process by being honest and learning to understand each other.

“A Winter Wedding” holds much more meaning for people in relationships rather than those who are single. The ones in committed relationships can identify with the emotions the main couple and parents are experiencing. One of the best lines from the film is “You are my dream wedding…” If you are looking for the right film to get you in the New Years/Winter mood, this one is for you. Susan Walters also stars in this holiday special.

[VOTE] What Is Your Opinion of Jesus Christ Superstar”?

The iconic “Jesus Christ Superstar” makes a stop at the Lyric Opera of Chicago in April 2018. I have never seen the play, but I’ve always been skeptical with the title alone.

This week, BTSCelebs received an official  press release about the Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice classic which included the following synopsis:

“… this global blockbuster tells the story of the final weeks in the life of Jesus Christ, from the perspective of Judas Iscariot. As Christ’s followers grow more fervent, Judas must make his fateful choice between faith and betrayal.”

I want to know what you think about “Jesus Christ Superstar”. Do you love, hate, or never seen it before? Take the poll below to share your opinion.

Theatre Review: Joffrey Ballet’s “The Nutcracker”

Christopher Wheeldon’s “The Nutcracker” resembles a fan favorite on Broadway.

In this re-imagined version of a timeless classic, a poor girl named Marie (Amanda Assucena) dreams of a perfect World’s Fair. Following a humble yet joyous Christmas party (in the small home she shares with her widow mom and brother), Marie falls fast asleep and is whisked away to a wonderful place where countries come together and showcase the appeal of their homeland. The Great Impresario of the Fair (Miguel Angel Blanco) guided Marie and his apprentice Peter (Alberto Velazquez) throughout the breathtaking vision. However, the biggest surprise came for the Great Impresario himself when he fell in love with the Queen of the Fair (Victoria Jaiani) and Marie’s mother in real life.

Each scene reminds me of a gorgeous painting come to life. The dancers were exceptional in their roles in reality and the dream world. The Arabian, Spanish, Venetian Masked and Snow, and Nut dancer’s choreography are the ones to highly anticipate. The snow scene alone made the audience feel like we had walked into our very own dream… that we wanted to last forever.

The Joffrey Ballet outdid themselves when it came to the spectacular backdrop, props and wardrobe. It was simply exquisite. From the detailed house interior to the lighted World’s Fair, it’s impossible not to be blown away by the stage! I believe that the scenery even surpassed Lyric Opera‘s set in past years.

Christopher Wheeldon’s “The Nutcracker” runs thru December 30th, 2017 at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago.

Yesterday, “The Magnificent Seven” actor took some time out of his day to show love to those suffering on the West coast and remind others to do the same. It was a simple message accompanied by a horrific image illustrating the current state of events.

Movie Reviews: “12 Days of Giving” and “Christmas Princess”

These two films are gems you can’t miss this Christmas season.

Yesterday, UP tv premiered the touching family movie “12 Days of Giving”. Actor David Blue portrayed Baxter, who is a photographer that wins $50,000 and decides to share his winnings to bless those in his community. During his spending spree, he stumbles upon a widow named Pamela (actress Ashley Jones) and her young son. One surprise gift and a life-saving event transforms Baxter’s life and helps him go after his own dreams.

“12 Days of Giving” deserves 10 stars out of 10! It has “Paper Angels” charm while maintaining it’s own unique storyline. After one viewing, you’ll happily add this to your yearly must-watch Christmas collection.

“Christmas Princess” is another yearly must-watch. Based on the life story of brave young lady Donaly Marquez, the encouraging film gives you a glimpse into her dark past and places a spotlight on her bright future. Actress Nicole Muñoz portrays Donaly as she embarks on the competition to become one of the prestigious Rose Bowl princesses. However, the scars from her childhood (with her neglectful birth mom) threatens to ruin her present and future. Throughout the movie, Donaly has to learn to trust in God and rely on her family and friends to truly embrace a happy life.

“Christmas Princess” has just the right mixture of UP tv goodness and classic Lifetime suspense to keep you guessing until the very end. If you enjoy movies from both cable networks, this will become your new favorite. I loved the way her adoptive parents showered her with so much love and attention. They treated her and her siblings like they were their actual biological children. It seems their strong Christian faith was the glue that kept the family together. Actors Rosa Blasi and Zak Santiago portray her loving mom and dad, Sara and Ignacio Marquez.

You can catch the premiere of “Christmas Princess” this Sunday, December 10 at 7PM [EST] on UP tv.
