Movie Review: “The Game of Love”

TheGameoflove

UP tv’s newest film “The Game Of Love” stars Heather Locklear and Lochlyn Munro as bickering exes Jake and Frankie Cornell. In the movie, the pair fights over a basketball team that has clearly run its course, but Jake is reluctant to get rid of a family heirloom. As the film continues, they both realize that family is the only thing that truly matters, and teamwork can bring any business back from the dead.  Their on-screen children, Barton (Tom Stevens) and Alexandria (Emily Tennant), had very small roles considering their status in the production.

Unfortunately, I was disappointed in “The Game of Love” for a few reasons. Everyone’s acting was incredible (no disrespect to them), but the story was weak. It didn’t hold my interest. The innuendos were very distasteful and annoying at times. The ladies’ wardrobe could have been more appropriate for family-friendly programming. (ex: Heather’s outfit above and she and on-screen daughter’s skirts riding up in latter scenes when they were seated.)

I have very high expectations for UP tv programming. I enjoyed many productions from them in the past, but this one just didn’t measure up.

7 Questions with Actor Tom Stevens

TomStevens_GameofLove2

BTSCelebs: Who is Tom Stevens?

Tom Stevens is an actor, musician, writer, proud dad and hard-working guy.

Why did you choose to be apart of “The Game Of Love”?

It was the writer. His movies raised me up. Something I watched when I was a kid, the Beethoven movies were a big part of my childhood. I remember when I saw his name attached to it. I was just really excited. I didn’t really know what he had been up to recently. When I saw the script and the dialogue, I thought it was fun and sharp.

In the movie, your family business is owning a basketball team. Do you play basketball in real life?

No. I suck at basketball. My dad did, but my dad was more of a sports player. I was an artist. As an artist, I decided to play guitar and become an actor. I ended up making a movie about playing sports. I think Barton (his character in the movie) wasn’t much of a basketball player either. He didn’t like basketball that much. It was just part of the business.

Were you a fan of Heather Locklear or Lochlyn Munro before playing their son on-screen?

Absolutely. It’s Heather Locklear! She was a babe in the 90s. She has over 10,000 hours of TV experience. When you get a job like this, pair up with them for your parents, it’s exciting, funny and kind of weird. Also, Lochlyn in ‘Dead Man on Campus’. I used to watch that movie pretty religiously. And he is hilarious. He is pretty well-known, and you immediately want a good rapport with him. I had a good time working with him.

Tell us about one unforgettable moment behind the scenes of the film.

We were flying in and Dianne Doan (Miss Tzu in the film) was on this flight with me. We got on the plane a little late, and it gave me the pilot seat. I had the headphones and everything. So, I was talking to the pilot and sitting up in front with them. We were flying on these little puddle jumpers. They seat like 10 people.

During my chat with the pilot, I say “do you see any whales out here?’ We were flying over the water on the island where we shot. He said, ‘No, not really. Not this time of year, but we do see dolphins. Those might me them.’ He pointed out across the dash and off to the side there were kind of like white speckles in the water. Then the pilot just dropped the plane and banked it. We dropped like 500 feet in altitude and flew over to it. Flew right above the dolphins and he cranked it to the side. Fanned the plane sideways so we were looking at it from the window. I just remember looking back at Dianne and being so excited. Everyone was like holding on to their seats, because there were barely any seat belts in the plane. We saw dolphins, and we landed. The pilot says ‘have a good day’ I was so stoked that the guy actually did that. That was such a random thing for the pilot to do.

NetFlix is bringing back so many classic these days. If you were given the opportunity, which NetFlix revival series would you love to be apart of?

It would be crazy if  it would be like the ‘Alien’ movies. They did a series about the ‘Alien’ movies with Sigourney Weaver. If they did a series about that, I would die. That would be so cool. I would be in that in a heartbeat. I love the Sci-Fi/Horror stuff.

What projects can fans look forward to seeing you in this year and 2017?

‘Wayward Pines’. It’s a series by M. Night Shyamalan from ‘The Sixth Sense’, ‘Unbreakable’,and all that.  It’s about a town set in the future. It’s kind of run by our version of the Nazi Youth. This younger generation has to maintain order to make sure the older generation doesn’t try and bring back old ways. My guy (Jason Higgins) leads the town in the second season. I have been shooting that for the last couple of months, and I’m getting ready to film it for the next couple of months. It starts airing May 25th on FOX.

Watch Mr. Tom Stevens portray Barton on UP tv’s The Game of Love May 15th at 7PM EST

NetFlix Needs to Revive Paolo Montalban and Brandy’s “Cinderella”

I would love to know what happened in their kingdom!

After attending Mr. Montalban’s “The King and I” on Sunday, I was reminded of one of my favorite films growing up…. the 1997 TV remake of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella”. The songs were glorious, and the casting was perfect. I watched the film several times in elementary school, and it still holds a special place in my heart. It is one of my favorite versions of the Cinderella tale alongside Hilary Duff and Chad Michael Murray’s movie.

Netflix is revamping so many beloved shows from the past recently….they need to make a sequel to this gem too! I would love to see Paolo Montalban and Brandy’s kingdom today! I know their children’s story would be even more magical.

I hope Netflix brings back the original cast (while honoring the late Whitney Houston) and makes the sequel a reality.

Opera Review: Lyric Opera’s “The King and I”

KingandI

BTSCelebs loved “The King and I” cast’s spectacular performance at the Lyric Opera of Chicago today. The adult and child actors excelled in their roles from the original 1950s classic. Actor Paolo Montalban shined as the arrogant and controlling King of Siam, while actress Kate Baldwin was very believable as Anna. I honestly can’t tell you whose acting impressed me the most: the adults or the children. Young actor Matthew Uzarraga (Crown Prince Chulalongkorn) almost stole the show with his powerful performance and witty delivery.  Plus,  Tuptim (actress Ali Ewoldt) and Lun Tha’s (Sam Simahk) love story was so heartbreaking it silenced the audience.

Lyric Opera’s ” The King and I” was true to the original Rodgers and Hammerstein production with the emphasis on religion and cultural differences. They sang everyone’s favorite songs like “Shall We Dance” and “Getting to Know You”.

I was a big fan of Paolo’s Prince portrayal in “Cinderella”, but I was a little disappointed he used such a distinct accent that we didn’t get the opportunity to hear his beautiful singing voice. I would have loved to hear Paolo’s natural voice for his musical numbers.

KingandI_5

In short, I didn’t remember the original play being so focused on religion…so I was a little taken aback by that. Nonetheless, I applaud the cast on effortless, picture perfect performance. They deserves ten stars on their stunning portrayal of the iconic and historic characters.

Book Review: Melissa Tagg’s “Like Never Before”

MelissaTagg_LikeNeverBefore

“Like Never Before” was surprising.

Author Melissa Tagg abandoned her sugary sweet stories of the past, and mixed LNB with a little mystery and heartbreak. Amelia Bentley and Logan Walker’s heart-racing love story was set in the picturesque Maple Valley (reminiscent of “Gilmore Girls'” Stars Hollow) in Iowa. Even though the town is fictional, Tagg indirectly invites readers to move into the small town where the Walker family is pretty much local royalty.

In the story, local newspaper editor Amelia finally meets the guy whose writing she fell in love with. The problem is….he is about to shut down her beloved hometown paper. The pair begin their journey of arguing, camaraderie and ultimately love in the tale bound together by a alleged prank pulled on Maple Valley by a late rich resident. The past and present mesh to create this heart-tugging story about discovery and finally letting go of past heartbreak.

This wasn’t my favorite Melissa Tagg story, but it was an ok read. In my opinion, there was too much emphasis on death and not enough on happiness and life. Plus, the one use of the word “Holy” was a little blasphemous and not characteristic of previous novels from Tagg.

If you are a history buff and love stories dealing with overcoming death and heartbreak, this story is for you. “Like Never Before” does have a happy ending.

[Interview] SubKulture Entertainment Talks K-Pop in the USA

SubK BTS TRB

Next weekend, my favorite K-Pop group of all time (SHINee) comes to my hometown for their first ever fanmeeting in the USA! Me and my fellow Shawols should send a big thank you to the live production company SubKulture Entertainment for bringing this event to our own backyard. In recent years, K-Pop has been coming to Chicago in groves, and two of the hottest boy groups (SHINee and GOT 7) will stop here this Spring and Summer because of the hard work of SubKulture.

BTSCelebs was recently given the opportunity to virtually interview the dedicated people behind the brand. During our chat, they talked about the history of their company, the birth of the SHINee fanmeeting, the possibility of South Korean actor fanmeetings and so much more.

My interview with SubKulture starts now!

BTSCelebs: How was SubKulture Entertainment born?

SubKulture: SubKulture Entertainment came into existence, because we were dissatisfied with the level of concert promotion in the K-pop world. Our management team had been working on a variety of projects for several years, from TV commercials, reality shows, as well as concerts. We saw an opportunity to capitalize on a growing market of non-Asian fans that were largely being ignored by the previous crop of promoters – so we decided the timing was right to start a new business entity.

Tell me how your first event came about.

We had met the members of BTS and Big Hit Entertainment during the filming of “BTS: American Hustle Life”, and were struck by their charisma, star power, and their tireless work ethic. During the finale of the show, at the “Show and Prove” concert, we saw the overwhelming fan response, and decided that if they were ever to tour the United States, we should be the ones to promote them. And at the beginning of 2015, an opportunity was offered to us, so we seized it.

Was there anything about your company’s very first event that you wish you could go back and change?

Yep – we would go back in time and find that young lady who made a gun threat towards Rap Monster, and take away her cell phone.

Are members of the SubKulture team K-Pop fans? If so, who are your favorite recording artists?

All of our members are K-pop fans, with the exception of our CEO. Some of our team’s favorite artists are EXO, VIXX, BTS, and A-Pink, as well as classic K-pop like g.o.d.

What prompted you to choose Chicago as the location for SHINee’s first fanmeeting in the USA?

Out of professional courtesy and an unwritten agreement amongst promoters, we avoided the other cities in which SHINee was already performing – namely: LA and Toronto. By staging an event in the same city, it could hurt their ticket sales, and we would never want another promoter doing something similar to us.

NYC was an obvious choice, but with Kcon in June, we wanted to avoid an overlap, since K-Pop events can be prohibitively expensive, and fans often voice concerns about running out of money.

Furthermore, Chicago is the 3rd largest city in the country, and one of the only true metropolises in the United States. There are numerous other large cities within driving distance, and Chicago has shown itself to be very profitable for K-Pop concerts.

We’d love to bring acts to mores cities but in the end, fans often forget that the world of K-pop concerts is a business – we have to maintain profitability to sustain our business and keep bringing more acts for the fans to see.

What surprises should we expect from the SHINee fanmeeting next month?

You’ll just have to wait and see. 🙂

After the fanmeeting, should ShaWols anticipate a SHINee World Tour stop in the Windy City in the near future?

That’s up to SM Entertainment – we don’t have any idea what plans they might have for SHINee in the future.

Will SubKulture consider bringing fanmeetings for top actors (ex: Song Joong Ki) to the USA too?

We have talked about doing lots of different kinds of events – because of our filmmaking background, we often produce and run management for TV shows like “Super Star K”, “Get it Beauty”, and “TaeTiSeo”. And doing actor fanmeets is something that our management team has discussed, along with other types of events.
