Album Review: Mandisa’s “Get Up – The Remixes”

Mandisa_09232014-

Another exquisite masterpiece!

Mandisa is on a roll with the fabulous music she releases. Her latest album titled “Get Up The Remixes” is a compilation of her hit singles “Overcomer”, “Good Morning”, “Stronger” and many others. The songs retain their original lyrics with a touch of sass and addicting pop tunes. “My Deliverer” even salsa dances into a Latin melody.

I’m not a fan of remix albums, but Mandisa made one of the best ones I have ever heard. You almost forget it is a remix project. The whole album deserves an A+ rating. Her voice is superb in every track. Mandisa has one of the best voices in Christian music in the last decade.

The stand out tracks are “Back To You”, “Joy Unspeakable”, “My Deliverer” and “Waiting For Tomorrow”.

*A Special Thanks to The M Collective and Mandisa for the complimentary review copy of “Get Up-The Remixes” CD*

Fantasy Casting: “The Song” Movie Sequel

Who should star in the follow-up to the new movie “The Song”?

As the upcoming inspirational film heads to theaters this weekend, BTSCelebs is looking forward to a possible future of a movie series.

Alan Powell, Ali Faulkner and Caitlin Nicol-Thomas did a fantastic job bringing their characters to life and helping audiences relate to the Song of Solomon. I would love to see more Christian music based recording artists take on their roles in a possible sequel.

If Samuel Goldwyn Films decided to make a sequel, they should definitely narrow their search of cast members to Anthony Evans, Mandisa and Moriah Peters. They are already gifted vocalists and seeing their on-screen chemistry could be very interesting.

[Interview] 6 Questions with Producer Dave Alan Johnson

DaveAlanJohnson_09242014

BTSCelebs: Why did you decide to bring “Coffee Shop” to the television audience?

Dave Alan Johnson: I believe there is a great desire for (and need for) top quality entertainment, which not only respects a Christian world view, but actually embraces those values. Coffee Shop does that in a very romantic and comedic way with real heart. That’s what I think the audience wants and is not getting in the rest of culture.

Tell us about Coffee Shop’s leading lady. How does she differ from the current trend in Hollywood today?

DaveAlanJohnson_09242014-3

I think Laura Vandervoort is a burgeoning star. She’s got all of the qualities and talent to become a huge movie star. In that sense she is very much like a typical top Hollywood leading lady. However, the character she plays in COFFEE SHOP is what is very different than a typical Hollywood leading character. Nowhere in Culture do Christian women see a role model who is also modern, stylish, strong and relevant. We have some of those within the Christian world, but not in general culture, so we wanted to make a smart, entertaining, modern, fun, romantic movie that had a Christian woman in the lead role – which is not a sermon on film, but rather a top quality entertaining movie . Laura embodied that role amazingly!

I’m an author, as well as, a blogger. In my brand new eBook series “Moody Chills” I bridge the gap between mainstream and inspirational, how does “Coffee Shop” tie the two industries together?

DaveAlanJohnson_09242014-2

Everything I do I view as mainstream entertainment. That is always the approach and the target. What I create also always happens to have an inspirational aspect and Christian world view. To be effective we must first engage the audience. The way to do that is through doing entertaining well executed content. Once the audience is engaged they are available to accept the message of the content. If that message is presented in an entertaining and excellent package there can be real impact. For me that’s always the goal.

Who is your favorite author? Which of their books would you love to recreate on the silver screen?

Because I read so many scripts it’s sometimes hard for me to also read for pleasure. There’s just not enough time. I hate that because I love to read books! When I do find a book I love I read it voraciously. I love history books. I love non-fiction books. My favorite author right now may be Michael Lewis. When I read The Blind Side I tried to get the rights, but they were already taken. That’s the kind of movie I know how to make and would love to have made!

If you had the opportunity to cast one movie with only Christian recording artists, who would you choose?

Why would you choose these particular recording artists? Interesting question. Having done a series with Billy Ray Cyrus (Doc) I know about working with music artists. We had many other music artists in that series as well – Steven Curtis Chapman, Cece Winans, Jaci Velasquez… I always enjoyed working with them and some have become close friends. In each of those cases acting was new to them, but they figured things out quickly. There are some great young artists I think would be great to work with. Kari Jobe comes to mind. I just did something with a relatively unknown recently by the name of Mandi Mapes who is terrific. She’s an amazing music talent. The new generation is so media savvy that most of them have a very comfortable relationship to movies and TV. I love Casting Crowns and Chris Tomlin. I’d love to do something with all of them. I know I’m leaving many out – I hope they please forgive me! And if any of them want to do anything please call me!!

Should We Accept Kim Hyun Joong’s Apology?

Credit: KeyEast

Credit: KeyEast

Actor and singer Kim Hyun Joong recently sent out a formal written apology to his ex-girlfriend regarding the domestic violence case against him. He admitted to inflicting physical and psychological pain on the person he loved for two years. Hyun Joong pleaded for her forgiveness in the statement on his official website.

My question is… should we (his fans) forgive him?

The answer is not a simple one. Personally, I do not tolerate domestic violence of any kind. Men who hit women should not be praised. In turn, no one should be inflicting pain on one another period… Men or women! In Kim Hyun Joong’s case, we never saw the woman who accused him of abusing her physically, nor do we know her character. Fans only saw images of bruises and word of mouth claims she made to the police.

It’s impossible to take sides in a case which is so cloudy to begin with. Nonetheless, Kim Hyun Joong took responsibly in whatever role he played in the ordeal and formally apologized.

So in Hyun Joong’s case, I say forgive him. In Christianity, you are suppose to forgive others regardless of the reason. Love him or not, unforgiveness is not going to solve anything. It will only make us all feel worse.

For his sake and our own, let us forgive Kim Hyun Joong and move on.

Movie Review: “Coffee Shop”

Credit: UPtv

Credit: UPtv

UPtv’s autumn movie titled “Coffee Shop” resembles a marriage between Hallmark Channel and any made for TV Christmas movie… without the tree. The sugary classic love story stars Laura Vandervoort as Donavan, a young coffee shop owner in a small town. She meets Broadway scriptwriter Ben (Cory M. Grant) and the pair fall in love with a few bumps along the way.

BTSCelebs’ September 2014 interview guest Rachel Hendrix plays Donavan’s desert loving sister Becky who is determined to help her sis find love. Kevin Sorbo’s part is very small in the movie, but his grand presence is made known by his connection with Ben.

“Coffee Shop” is not filled with twists and turns. There is nothing shocking or overly heartbreaking about it. It’s just like the titled suggests. This movie is a warm cup of coffee with a generous helping of sugar.

“Coffee Shop” debuts on the UPtv network this Sunday.

Movie Review: “The Perfect Wave”

Credit: Divine Inspiration

Ride the wave to God.

The feeling you experience watching the “The Perfect Wave” is indescribable. In the movie, Scott Eastwood portrays Ian McCormack, a real life surfer. His journey across the world in search of the perfect parties, hook-ups and incredible waves is cut short by his death.  Annabel (played by Rachel Hendrix) is flirty and free-spirited. She doesn’t follow the strict rules of life, and she is in a continuous search for something more. Annabel indirectly leads Ian to his untimely passing by mysteriously disappearing after a lovers’ quarrel.

Scott’s portrayal of Ian’s journey from death to life was riveting. The only force in the world that had the power to bring him back to life was God.

Cheryl Ladd’s character has to be the best spiritual mom I have ever seen in any inspirational movie to date. Her moving prayer scene compounded with Ian’s dying scene is a MUST SEE.

“The Perfect Wave” is not a movie for Christians, it is for anyone who is searching for direction in this world. If you are confused and anticipating the next big thrill in life, you need to experience this film.
