Barbara Freethy: “I Never Hit The New York Times Bestselling List as a Traditionally Published Author”

Sunset on Khao Lak beach in Thailand.

After selling over 4.5 Million ebooks worldwide and appearing regularly on the bestselling lists for Apple iBooks, Google Play and Kobo, Barbara is sharing the simple secret to her success.

While she continues to write her bestselling family series: “The Callaways”, check out part two of our interview.

BTSCelebs: Which book launched your writing career into star status?

Barbara Freethy: I knew amazing things were happening when my self-published ebook SUMMER SECRETS hit #1 on the New York Times Bestseller List, and it ended up staying on the list for another four weeks. I had been publishing my books with traditional publishers before turning to self publishing, and  while I had had some success, I had never hit the NYT list as a traditionally published author. To be able to put my first self-published book in the #1 spot was a huge feat. And to have done it all by myself was pretty amazing. Since that book hit the list, I’ve had 18 self-published titles appear on the NYT list.

But it’s not just about bestseller lists for me. It’s about reaching new readers, and since I began self publishing in 2011, I’ve sold over 4.5 million ebooks. That’s a lot of readers! As I continue to publish, I hope to continue to grow that readership.

How did you promote your very first book? Did you do extensive traveling?

I’ve never done extensive book tours. Quite frankly, they take a lot of time away from writing, and they aren’t always that successful. I spend most of my promotional efforts online, utilizing social media to connect with readers. I also continue to build a newsletter that’s a direct link to the reader. But the most important promotion a writer can do is to write the next book. The more books you write, the less promotion you have to do, because the books will keep your name out there and will grow your fan base. Slower writers have to do more promotion because they have to find a way to keep their name and books discoverable in between releases. Either way, as a writer, you’re going to do a lot of work!

What advice would you give to a brand new author who just self published their first ebook?

Be patient! It takes a while to build a writing career. Like most other things in life, you have to pay your dues and put your time in. Some first books take off like rockets, but those are few and far between. Most writers won’t see an audience beginning to build until they’ve put out two to three books. You might think that’s a lot of writing, and it is, but professional writers are in it for the long term. You have to think beyond writing one book and look at writing as a career.

A lot of new self-publishing writers have discovered some benefit to writing two books before even putting up the first book, so that they have the second book ready to go (or almost ready) within one to two months of the first release. When you have a year or more between book releases, you lose momentum, especially when you’re a new writer.

I would also encourage authors to publish directly to the retail platforms whenever possible. Amazon, Apple, Barnes and Noble, Google and Kobo all have platforms built for Indie authors. You’ll save giving a middleman a cut of your money and you’ll be working directly with the retailer. If a writer chooses to use a third party service, I urge them to research who they are working with. There are a lot of companies taking advantage of writers who don’t know better. Know exactly what you’re getting for your money and beware of groups asking for a lot of cash up front and/or taking a large percentage of your money for a lengthy term or forever.

There are lots of self-published author loops and forums on the Internet. Join in and learn the business. You’ll find an amazing group of writers willing to share everything they’ve learned. Self-publishing allows anyone to bring a story to the market, but there’s a difference between being a writer who just has one book in them to being a writer who wants a long career. There’s a place for all kinds of writers, but you have to set your expectations accordingly.

And lastly, a writer’s most important focus has to be the book. Readers are picky and judgmental and if you put up a book that’s not professionally written and lacking in craft, the reviews will be painful. It’s always best to take the time up front to come up with a great book and then deliver it to the audience. Which brings me back to my first point, be patient. The Internet isn’t going anywhere and self publishing is going to be around for a very long time, because it’s already proven itself to be an extremely lucrative and viable path for writers of all levels writing all kinds of books.

BTSCelebs’ Interview with Best Selling Author Barbara Freethy- Part 1

BarbaraFreethy_08042014

Barbara Freethy is a renown self-publishing success. She has authored 40 titles from contemporary romance/suspense to women’s fiction. After hitting the bestseller list 18 times, Barbara was honored with the Amazon KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) Bestselling Author of All Time title.

She recently stopped by BTSCelebs to share the secrets to her success, and tell us a little more about the woman behind the pages.

BTSCelebs: What inspired you to pursue a career in writing?

Barbara Freethy: I grew up in a house filled with books. My mother was a voracious reader and passed her love of fiction on to me. I was crafting stories in my head for years before I actually decided to write a novel. That decision came in my mid twenties. I was working in public relations after college, writing a lot of non-fiction press releases and newsletter articles for high-tech companies, and I realized that the best part of the job for me was the writing. So in my spare time, I started writing a novel.

My first novel took about three years, during a time period in which I got married and had my first child. So life was pretty busy, but I eventually sold that novel and started work on the next one, and then the next one. That was the beginning of what has turned out to be an amazing career.

Who is your favorite author?

This is a difficult question for a writer to answer because I love many, many authors, and I read across all genres. Two of the romance and women’s fiction writers that have inspired me the most are Nora Roberts and Susan Elizabeth Phillips. I love Nora’s ability to weave layers of suspense and mystery into a story, and I think Susan’s characters always have amazing wit and chemistry.

Do real life events or people inspire the characters and plots in your books? If so, please tell us about them.

The ideas for my stories come from everywhere. I can see someone in the line at the supermarket and see a personality or a physical tic that inspires my imagination to take off. I can read a news story and imagine what if I took this and gave it my own twist? Usually that seed of an idea turns into something that I couldn’t foresee at the beginning.

Creating a book is a dynamic and fluid process, and I make a lot of changes as I go along. While I know my main plot points when I sit down to write, I am also the kind of writer who lets the writing inspire the plot. I get some of my best ideas when I’m in a character’s head and they do or say something that surprises me.

One of my most challenging books to write came from the idea of a woman who gets in a car crash, wakes up in the hospital, and has no memory of who she is. And then the twist—the cops come and want to know where her baby is, because there was a baby-seat in the backseat of her car. She can’t remember a child. What kind of mother can’t remember their own baby? That question drove the plot of SILENT RUN. I soon realized that it’s very difficult to write a story when the main protagonist has no idea of who they are. I couldn’t give out any clues in introspection. I had to develop the character as seen through the eyes of the people around her. The book turned out to have great reviews, so somehow I pulled it off. It’s one of my favorite stories but was also one of the most challenging to write.

Tell us all about your weekly writing routine. Do you write everyday?

I write at least five days a week, and when I’m a month away from deadline, I usually write on the weekends as well. Writing is a full-time job, and there never seem to be enough hours in the day to get everything done. But I don’t work a 9-5 schedule. I write better in the afternoon or evening, so I usually handle my business demands in the mornings and save the writing for later in the day.

Now that I am self publishing my books, I have to wear many hats. So in addition to the creative process of being a writer, I also have to run the rest of my business which includes producing the digital book with a fantastic cover, doing marketing and promo, and working with the retailers. I have a lot of balls in the air. It’s a fun and challenging juggle.

In part 2, Barbara will respond to the following questions:

Which book launched your writing career into star status?

How did you promote your very first book? Did you do extensive traveling?

What advice would you give to a brand new author who just self published their first ebook?

Fantasy Casting: Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos in “I Love Lucy” Remake

KellyRipa_Mark Consuelos_08012014.jpg-1

I Love Kelly!

The timeless TV classic “I Love Lucy” has been my all time favorite since I was born! Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz stole my heart in the 80s and 90s, and I still enjoy the show to this day.

After attending the Lucy Live! show last year, it’s about time they remade it. Of course, Hollywood hasn’t released any news about a reboot of this series, but BTSCelebs can dream, can’t we?

The first time I saw Mark and Kelly host “Live! with Regis and Kelly” years ago, I thought they were the modern day Desi and Lucy. The cute married couple have amazing chemistry on-screen, and they even control their own production company, Milojo. If that’s not like Desi and Lucy, I don’t know what is. The successful duo are actors and loving parents to their three children too.

BTSCelebs is rooting for the Consuelos couple to eventually tap into their inner Ricardos!

Book Review: Kristy Moody’s “Moody”

Moody_KristyMoody_07252014

My life story is now out on display!

After years of being incognito, I finally released a tell-all about my growing up years, adolescence and the present day. “Moody” discusses my journey into K-Pop, while digging into special unforgettable moments along the way.

If you were ever curious about my true life behind-the-scenes, look no further than “Moody”. The road is unexpected, but it is definitely worthwhile.

I highly recommend this ebook to anyone who loves reading a good well-rounded book.

Check out a quick excerpt of “Moody” below:

“Hold your peace and stay with the crazy one,” Mom said while tending to a bathroom pipe run amuck.

My entire life has been anything but ordinary. When you transition from a quiet life in the elite south suburbs of Chicago to the mean streets of the ghetto, life turns into a struggle for survival….

Album Review: Moriah Peters “Brave”

MoriahPeters_07012014

Australia in America has arrived!

BTSCelebs enjoyed listening to Moriah Peters-Smallbone’s sophmore project “Brave”. The entire album encourages Christians to be brave in their faith. It even tells non-believers to take a chance on Christianity because it does not disappoint.

The entire 11 track album hints of tunes from For King and Country and Rebecca St. James’ albums. I can hear her hubby Joel Smallbone‘s influence from his homeland. It’s a pleasant surprise.

The stand out tracks are definitely “Brave”, “You Carry Me” and “Born To Be Free”. “Give Me Jesus” is a serene worship song that preludes the “Brave” part 2 featuring Andy Mineo.

Overall, I liked “Brave” and I highly recommend it for people of all ages.

Here is the complete tracklist:

Brave

Oh Fear (My God is Near)

To Leave It All Behind

You Carry Me

Stand Strong

I’ll Wait For You

Don’t Want To Live For Me

Born To Be Free

WaterFall

Give Me Jesus

Brave (feat. Andy Mineo)

Check out a few of the songs BTSCelebs recommends below:

*A Special Thanks to Brickhouse Entertainment and Moriah Peters-Smallbone for a press copy of the Brave album.*
