Jun Areia: “[Areia Remix] Became The Most Subscribed KPop Remake Brand Online”

BTSCelebs: Please introduce yourself to BTSCelebs readers:

Jun Areia: My name is Jun Areia. I’m a songwriter, sound designer and producer for Korean Pop music. I moved to Seoul in 2010 where after learning the language for a year, I work as a freelancer with various companies.

How did you become a music producer?
I have been making music since the late 90s with several albums released with me as an indie artist. During those days, I developed an understanding of sound design, arrangement and vocals. Also, I wrote a large number of songs, lyrics and engineered for several indie artists. After completing my degree in Audio Technology, I realized that engineering is half of the recipe and musical knowledge is a must. So my efforts turned into studying music theory and harmonization,as well as, learning how to play the piano and guitar. During my second degree (this time in Video Games Development), I felt something was lacking from all those Kpop songs. I wanted to watch those music videos and the idols under stronger and sexier beats. That’s when I started writing new music for popular kpop songs. The name was “areia remix” and it became the most subscribed kpop remake brand online. I started releasing its real potential only a year ago and therefore I made the choice to give it a serious go and here I am today.

You’re from Greece, what is the music industry like in your country?
Greece has a traditional connection with music and it’s a fundamental need rather than pop culture. Singers are worshipped for their beauty as everywhere else but singing is the most important element rather than dancing or looks.

Debut ages are also different than Korea as most singers start in their late 20s and can go on for several decades. Songs with deep lyrics can also become as popular as simpler songs.
The production budgets though don’t come anywhere near Korea. Unfortunately, there is a lot of musical and engineering talent going to waste.

Who is your favorite  Greek recording artist?
I grew up on trance and rave music and I had to contrast that somehow so all my favourite Greek artists were rock bands with deep lyrics. Such bands include “Diafana Krina” and “Ksilina Spathia”.

What sparked your interest in K-Pop?

I was already into Japanese Pop (Jpop) since 2001 and it was about the time that Lee Hyori’s 10 minutes was out that I started liking and observing K-Pop. Chae Yeon’s “Two of us” and later Wonder Girl’s “Tell Me” where some of the first songs that captivated my interested.

How did your working relationship with Trophy Entertainment begin?
In any kind of career the most important thing is gaining the understanding of how it works. While I’ve been pushing myself for better and better works, I was lacking a specific part of that understanding. Those days I had a chat with [f(x)’s]Electric Shock’s composers and they have gave me some important insights that included exactly that missing part. When Trophy contacted me requesting some samples I knew exactly what to send and the next day I was there meeting the CEO and I was assigned some work.

Next week, Areia will tell us what K-Pop hits he is currently working on, walk us thru the recording process and much more!

Album Review: TobyMac “Eye On It”

The wait is over….. Toby’s here!

You watched 5- time Grammy Winner TobyMac on Good Morning America with Mandisa, now sit back and enjoy my review of his new album “Eye On It”.

1. Me Without You: Do you ever feel lost? I know I do. TobyMac’s first single is all about finding oneself in God. Christianity can help many (including myself) discover who you are and lead you the right way. The dance tune is ready for a Christian club, but its lyrics are meant for the heart.

2. Steal My Show – This somber yet catchy tune talks about letting God take over your life. Specifically, Toby describes how he lets God take over his performances. He expresses his need for God to use his “shows”.

3. Eye On It – Is a powerful anthem! It describes a Christian’s purpose to run the good race toward God. Heaven is the ultimate goal he is aiming for. Toby is rejecting the things of the world to remain on the only road that leads to salvation.

4. Forgiveness  (ft. Lecrae) – Have you ever wanted to be forgiven for your faults? Well, the track “forgiveness” is about just that. The slow sweet rap tune gives listeners the assurance that everyone needs forgiveness…. and God forgives you for everything. The track features Christian hip hop artist Lecrae Moore.

5. Speak Life – Words can cut you in half! That is precisely why the song “Speak Life” tells music lovers to speak positive words to others. You never know if your words will influence someone to take their own life or begin anew. You can bring hope and love into people’s lives.

6. Unstoppable (ft Group1Crew’s Bianca) – This song’s message returns to Toby’s “Jesus Freak” days (with dc Talk). The rock infused rap mix is addicting for the true music lover. The message is all about Christians being different in the world and that our eyes are on the ultimate prize of Heaven. Christians are Unstoppable! The song features the vocals of hip hip group Group 1 Crew’s front lady Bianca.

7. Lose Myself “I want to lose myself to find you” are the lyrics from Toby’s song about denying the lusts and desires of the world to become the person God wants you to be. He tells God in the song He wants Him to mold him and completely lose himself in Him. The outer space like music is the perfect workout track, as well as, a soundtrack to any motion picture production.

8.  Family – Fight for your family! Toby expresses his desire to fight to keep marriage together. Obstacles may come, but never let anything break your union (and family). God put it together and Toby’s slow ballad makes you believe in the power of family all over again.

9.  Thankful For You –  This is a song of thanks to God. God took him to places he never dreamt he would go. Starting from humble beginnings to the CCM superstar he is now was all God’s doing. Toby acknowledges his thanks to his Heavenly Father for every door in his life that has opened. The steady urban beat is impossible not to love.

10. Made For Me – This single is about the perfect match in one’s life. He talks about his wife… the one God designed and made just for him. It’s like a man’s version of  Rebecca St. James’ “Wait For Me”…. after the wedding. The up-tempo Jamaican tune is sure to please all the romantics out there.

11. Mac Daddy (Tru’s Reality) – Toby’s son Truett steps up to the mic to express his desire to make his own music. The song shows Toby’s son asking his father for a “Mac” (electronics and modern tools to create music) and Toby instilling a good work ethic in his offspring. This fun song has a morally good message for all.

12. Favorite Song – The final track (before the remixes) is about one’s joy being in God’s presence. The duet (with fellow CCM  artist Jaime Grace) talks about someone living to God’s beat. Someone has accepted Christ and become a new Christian. God is now “like a lyric to his favorite song”.

The deluxe edition features HOT remixes of the following tracks:

Me Without You

Steal My Show

Lose Myself

Family

Loud and Clear ( the song ft. his son Truett from his 2010 album “Tonight“)

*A Special Thanks to Brian from The M Collective and TobyMac for the digital version of  “Eye On It”*

Adam Cappa: “Christian Music Has Provided An Alternative for Today’s Youth”

Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome Adam Cappa to our virtual interview chair.

As a longtime fan of CCM (circa: plus ONE and Stacie Orrico), this interview is close to my heart. Recently, I had the opportunity to interview the talented and inspirational singer via email. He shared his musicial inspirations, his dream job as a child, the road to the CCM industry, his ideas about the impact CCM is making in the world and more.

BTSCelebers, believe me when I tell you… question # 3 is every musician’s dream response! He gives BTSCelebs the true step by step process of him joining the music industry.

BTSCelebs: Plus ONE was the main reason I wanted to enter CCM (Contemporary Christian Music) growing up, who inspired you to become a recording artist?

Adam Cappa: I’ve always been inspired by Jon Foreman, Chris Tomlin, David Crowder, Dave Barnes and Matt Wertz from the very start. I would love to work with any of them, any day!  Three Men really inspire me right now. My father, my best friend Greg Boyce, who I worked on staff with at Fountain City Wesleyan Church, and Jeremy Camp, who all daily pour into me.

Did you always want to sing?

No. I always thought that I would be a police officer like my Dad, who is now a Sherriff.  Throughout High School, I was really involved in Young Life. During my sophomore year, I met the Lord at camp. I really looked up to a couple of guys involved as well, who happened to play guitar. So, for my sixteenth birthday, I bought a guitar. I began playing at youth group every Wednesday night, learning as I watched them play. Before I knew it I was involved with a youth group leading worship, and soon a permanent fixture on staff for the next five years. Songs began to pour from my heart, and singing became a part of what I did.

Famed CCM artist Jeremy Camp discovered you, describe how you were discovered and what was it like working on an album with him? (Details please)

One of my best friends, who I met through Young Life, happened to be friends with Jeremy Camp. December of 2007, I got a call from my buddy and Jeremy. Jeremy invited me up to his home in Indiana to record a demo. This is where we began our friendship. I would go to shows from time to time to see him or to visit at his home. Over the next few years, the Lord continued to grow my passion for ministry and my friendship with Jeremy. In 2009, I graduated college and the Lord had given me a vision for ministry on the road. I sold my car, bought a van, and hit the road, playing churches and teen camps all over the country.

A year later an opportunity to open for Jeremy came about. I sent Jeremy a text asking if it was cool, and he said “absolutely!” That night as I walked off stage, Jeremy grabbed me and said “Listen, I love your heart and what your doing. I’ve been praying about investing in someone and feel like you’re the guy. My dad even said something to me about you, and that I need to do something with you, and my dad never says that stuff. He said we have the same heart. So I want to get you on the road with me and do a record and just help you out. What do you think? We should pray about it.”  And pray we did. About three months later, we reconnected and felt the Lord saying go. We started writing an album together with Andy Dodd and Jeremy began pouring into my life. Once we had a few tunes together Jeremy took them over to BEC and asked them to have a listen as he shared his heart behind investing in my life. BEC grabbed a hold of Jeremy’s vision and asked me to be apart of the BEC family.

Do you think Christian music is making a positive impact on today’s youth?

Yes, definitely.  I think that Christian music has provided an alternative for today’s youth who are easily swayed or influenced by other music that contains messages promoting choices that lead to death.  That is not to say that there aren’t good messages and great people in regular music who are providing positive music as well.  Christian music certainly has an awesome influence in providing encouragement for today’s youth to remain righteous, loving, and worshipful in a culture that often ignores the truth.

Former CCM artists Joy Williams (Civil Wars) and Katy Hudson (Katy Perry) have successfully crossed over into the mainstream market, do you desire to break into mainstream music as well?

I am currently focused on being open to whatever the Lord has planned for my life.  It’s not so much about what market I’m in, but rather who can be encouraged and relate to my music.  I think that there are a lot of positive songs on The Rescue that can provide a message of hope to all types of people, not just Christians.

*A Special Thanks to Adam Cappa and Steve Harpine for the interview and image.*

Mandisa to Perform on Good Morning America

“Good Morning…. wake up to a brand new day”

The lyrics above are from Mandisa’s popular single “Good Morning“. On August 20th, the  American Idol alum and CCM artist announced via her official Twitter and Facebook that she will be performing the catchy tune on GMA.

Mandisa: “…. Next Monday I will be singing “Good Morning” on GOOD MORNING AMERICA!” (FB)

Her original single features the rapping talent of Mr. TobyMac. I wonder if he will join her on stage.
