[Interview] Kathryn Cushman: I Hope Readers Leave Each Of My Books With Something To Think About… No Sermons Preached, Just A “Real Life” Experience

Lauren Beccue and Kathryn Cushman

Kathryn Cushman started her writing journey in 2003, and she has been blessing lives with a wonderful variety of fictional tales ever since. A Promise to Remember, Waiting for Daybreak and Leaving Yesterday are just some of her novels from the 2010s that readers have thoroughly enjoyed. This month, she released a new gem titled The Plans We Made with co-author Lauren Beccue. BTSCelebs was recently given the opportunity to virtually interview Kathryn and learn more about her and her latest heartwarming novel.

BTSCelebs: Who is Kathryn Cushman professionally?

Kathryn Cushman: I am someone who writes the kind of stories I want to read. While that mark continues to evolve, I always want a thought provoking story with characters that hang around for a while after you’ve finished reading.

Where do you gain the most inspiration for your impressive books?

Thank you for that adjective 🙂 The answer is–life. Watching people. Listening. My husband often says that the questions I ask show that I am ‘veering away from the facts, and looking for the story.’  He’s usually correct.

The Plans We Made seems to be a unique family story. Tell us about the birth of this particular novel.

My co-writer, Lauren Beccue, and I were friends, who occasionally met in coffee shops to write. We didn’t work on the same project, just sat quietly beside each other and tapped away on our laptops (she writes non-fiction as a rule). One day, she told me about an idea her husband had given her for a novel. It was a great idea! I was working on something else, but I told her she should definitely run with it. She began to toy with the idea of writing fiction. Several months later, she asked if I would be interested in co-writing it with her. I prayed about it, and was happy when the answer came back ‘yes’.

The characters in the story have drastically different lifestyles. Caroline Chapman is a career woman, while Linda Riley is a wife and mother. Which character do you identify with the most? What inspired the other character?

Linda is definitely more like me. Like Linda, I raised two children. Like Linda, one of my children got desperately sick as a teenager. Also, Linda is close to my age. Caroline was conceived and written by Lauren– who is quite a bit younger, and has a really fun and quirky voice. I liked the contrast of the two women.

What is one scene you wrote that didn’t make it in the final cut, but you secretly wish it did?

The original plan involved an epilogue that was CRAZY. I still love the idea, but it was out there. Everyone who’s ever read the book and found out what we wanted to do, has commented that we were wise to change it. (I can’t say what it was without giving away a big spoiler for the final book).

Tell us about an important time in your life where the plans you made didn’t go the way you wanted, but God worked it together for your good.

There have been a lot of them. I suppose one of the strongest was multiple years of infertility and miscarriages. It was excruciating. Still, I look back on that time as bittersweet, realizing some of the life lessons I could not have learned any other way than by going through those experiences.

From A Promise to Remember to Fading Starlight, which novel do you identify with the most? What do you want readers to take away from your writing?

Each of them has a little bit of me, but I’d say for right now, it’s Almost Amish, as I am currently in a period of intentionally keeping my life slower and simpler than it used to be. (Obviously, Covid has helped with that goal quite a bit!). And I hope readers leave each of my books with something to think about–no clear cut answers, no sermons preached, just a “real life” experience that makes them see things in a different way. I think a good illustration is the Titanic. We all knew it was a big boat, it sank, lots of people were killed. It was sad and awful. Then the movie happened, and suddenly it wasn’t just a sad story, it was real.

What can projects and/or activities readers anticipate from you next year?

I am currently working on an historical series set in tsarist Russia. It is my first time to explore historical writing, so it’s not moving as quickly as I’d like. Still, I’m hopeful for a Christmas novella in 2021, with a full book to follow in 2022.

CHRIST IN YOU: THE VOICE Celebrates Amazon Release

The overflowing love from global fans helped bring CHRIST IN YOU: THE VOICE to one of the most popular streaming platforms. The dramatic documentary, which features interviews from Bill Johnson, Kris Vallotton, Lisa Bevere, John Bevere, Graham Cooke, Bob Hazlett and Raniero Cantalamessa, hits Amazon on August 15th.

According to an official press release from Biscuit Media Group, this film is the first in a series. It “highlights modern heroes of faith that explore the reasons that people hold back from bringing hope, healing, and restoration to a broken world. Through stories of faith and restoration, on the street demonstrations, and practical strategies, this documentary can help everyday Christians step out in faith and use their God-given gifts to impact their communities.”

Di Meglio had this to say about the groundbreaking film, “We started creating the CHRIST IN YOU films to share the good news of how ordinary people are speaking out to share the Gospel in powerful ways. We hope these films will show that anyone, everyone, can move in the miraculous. By sharing how God is transforming people through his love, we hope to empower the body of Christ to step out in faith, listen to the voice of God, activate your prophetic gifts, and take action according to what He is saying to you.”

10 Incredible Books That Instantly Captured My Attention

I rarely read a book twice, but the books on this list were very tempting. Whether it be the story, descriptive scenery or even the food, there was something about each book here that I’ll never forget. If you want to enjoy some quality reading this season, you’ve come to the right place.

1 Kathryn Cushman’s Fading Starlight

The breathtaking West Coast scenery seemed like the perfect getaway! You’ll be dreaming about your own quintessential home after reading Cushman’s lush descriptions. The story itself is wonderfully wholesome.

2 Melissa Tagg’s  Made To Last

This novel introduced me to Tagg’s unique writing style and love of “Gilmore Girls”. I was a big “Gilmore Girls” fan back in the day, and I stuck around for her future books that described a picturesque Maple Valley with such lovable residents.

3 Jessica Dotta – Born Of Persuasion

Escape to the ultimate fantasy world in this elegant romance with a hint of the thriller genre.  It’s set in historic England, however, it puts a deliciously dark twist on classics.

4 T.I. Lowe’s Sea Glass Castle

Filled with romance, friendship, realism and the serene East coast. It has all the elements of a well-rounded story. The right ending to a trilogy.

5 Carla Laureano’s The Saturday Night Supper Club

The love story was sweet, but the dishes were even sweeter. I found myself anxious to get to the next chapter just to read about the new meals/desserts the main character was ready to serve.

6 Sarah Jakes – Lost And Found

Before I read this book, I knew about Bishop T.D. Jakes, but I didn’t know anything about his children. It was eye-opening to read such a raw and honest account from one of his daughters. You have to applaud her for keeping it real!

7 Dee Henderson’s Taken

Besides the engrossing tale, I found the description of the meal at the very beginning absolutely delicious. Henderson is very good at describing the smallest things.

8 Diann Mills’ Burden of Proof

There wasn’t a dull moment in this gripping mystery novel. It’s the kind of story you pick up but don’t want to put it down until the very last page. This one introduced me to Mills’ work and piqued my interest in future books.

9 Courtney Walsh’s Just Let Go

This story was a good mixture of Hallmark Channel and real life. It wasn’t hard to relate to the characters while cheering for a possible happy ending.

10 Dagny Griffin’s  Shine

Even though this is strictly a picture book, the fact that the main character gives everyone such a great example of a righteous person… is definitely worth a second look.

Happy Reading!

[Interview] Caitie Hurst Beasley: Look For Good Happening All Around You, Because It Is…Kindness Will Never Be Cancelled!

Since 2018, extraordinary recording artist Caitie Hurst has been blessing our ears with a variety of inspirational music. You may know her best from some of her well-known pop singles “Nothing To Hide”, “How Could I Be Silent” and “Yours”. The CCM star continues to inspire the masses with her positive message and bright outlook on life.

Let’s learn more about her current music, interests, future plans and her words of wisdom when it comes to staying positive during this global pandemic.

BTSCelebs: Who is Caitie Hurst professionally?

Caitie: I’m an artist with Centricity Music Records and a worship leader. I travel and sing for a living, and I am so grateful for what I get to do!

Who are your biggest musical influences in 2020?

My biggest musical influences of 2020 include, Charlie Puth, Ryan Tedder, Taylor Swift (as always), Jon Foreman, and Colony House.

Drive-In Tours are growing in popularity these days, which singers would you love to tour with and why?

I would love to tour with Switchfoot, because I’ve always loved absolutely everything they do. Or, Hillsong Young & Free because I love how they bring people together in worship!

Which song would you recommend to a music lover who has never heard your music before?

I’d say my song ‘All the Things’ – although its not one of my more popular songs, it’s fun, upbeat, roll your windows down kinda song, and has the central message of having faith in Christ that most of my music is about!

If you could join one movie’s soundtrack, which movie would it be and why?

‘The Greatest Showman’! I thought the soundtrack was absolutely brilliant, encouraging, and fun to sing along to. It’s just like one big party (!!!) with a slow ballad here and there… which is general parallel for how my life is anyway. Haha. I sang to the top of my lungs in the car to every song for like a week straight after i saw the movie!

What other profession are you so passionate about that you would love to pursue it alongside your music?

I love Youth Ministry and was a youth worker at my church for a couple years before signing my record deal and starting to travel. I am still really passionate about being involved in the lives of middle and high school girls, and I still get to do a little bit of that even while I’m on the road. I plan on always pursuing this passion no matter what I’m doing- I don’t have to work in a church to do that, which is awesome! I also LOVE thrifting, so I’d also love to pursue this and make it a profession alongside my career someday.

Tell us all about the projects fans can expect from you in 2021.

OOOH i am soooo excited for all the projects coming out later this year and in 2021! I’m coming out with a new EP later this year- that i cannot even WAIT for everyone to hear! These songs are so special and I’m so ready to get them out into the world! And I hope to have my first full length album in 2021!!!

What words of encouragement do you have for those who are depressed during this pandemic?

You know, this is SUCH an interesting time. Everyone has dealt with it differently and has been affected by it differently. I’m reminding myself every day to have grace for myself and those around me, because nothing is normal so we cant have normal expectations for people, ourselves, and life in general! I would encourage you if you’re depressed in this time- to not just be on your phone all the time. But get outside, if you’re comfortable with it – go on a walk, enjoy the sun, and go and do something for someone else! You’d be surprised how it makes YOU feel better and get out of your head!! Even if you go buy a friend their favorite candy and leave it in their mailbox, or leave a coffee on their doorstep- small, thoughtful acts of kindness are so helpful in getting out of a funk, I’ve found! Look for the good in your day, not just all of the bad things going on in the world! Don’t only focus on the negative, look for good happening all around you, because it is! I’m talking like, someone carrying groceries for an older woman, someone bringing a meal to a homeless person on the side of the road- those kinds of things. Kindness will never be cancelled!!! I’ve found that waking up, and starting my day spending time with the Lord, reading my Bible, and talking to Him- has been what has gotten me through this time! Not neglecting that time with Him is so important to me! It helps me see the world the way He sees it, and helps me remember that when I feel so out of control with what’s happening in the world, HE is in control, and I can trust Him with every little detail of my life!

[Interview] Sade Champagne: “I Want People To Know That… They Are A Miracle And So Loved

The West Coast has been completely blown away by Sade’s remarkable talents. She is an award-winner with a list of accomplishments that deserve to be broadcast nationwide. Through BTSCelebs, the Midwest is now placing a spotlight on the multi-talented star inspiring the masses.

Meet Sade Champagne!

BTSCelebs: Who is Sade Champagne professionally?

Sade: I am a professional musical artist, performer, speaker, philanthropist, mentor and entrepreneur. I love using my gifts and talents to express myself, to share about God’s love and to help inspire, encourage and empower others to live their dreams.

What started your interest in the entertainment industry?

I starting having dreams and visions when I was a little girl (around age 4) about doing all the things I am doing today and traveling the world. I love using my gifts and talents to express myself, to share about God’s love and to help inspire, encourage, empower them to live their dreams.

Which one of your current roles jumpstarted your impressive career?

I would say a combo of my singing, speaking, teaching and event planning opened a lot of doors for me.

From your online profile we can see you’re a Christian, tell us about your road to Christianity

I’ve always known God since I was a little girl. My dreams and visions came from God, and I believe growing up it was one of the main ways Jesus spoke to me and helped me to stay encouraged even when I was going through traumatic times. God is my Creator, Savior, Best Friend and overall first and greatest Love of my life. When I had nothing and no one to call my own, Jesus was the One Who kept me. Even today nothing and no one makes me happier than God!

What inspired you to create the “To him” series on the Grindhard Radio Network?

I created this series first inspired by one of my best friends, biggest inspirations and creative partners, Jeremy Watkins. He would always tell me that he didn’t know any woman creating content like this, and he believed that I had the heart and ability to help bring encouragement, grace and transformation to many men and even women, who would receive from this series. I think now more than ever, women and men need to come together and stop tearing each other down. We are both the prize and a gift to each other from God. It’s time to heal!

You’re an accomplished musician who has been honored with awards. What message do you want listeners from all religious backgrounds to take away from your music?

I want people to know that #1 They are not a mistake; they are a miracle and so loved! #2 Never let anyone tell you what you can dream or expect for your life. Never let anyone crush your spirit or box you in. #3 It doesn’t take a lot to be joyful, and we don’t have to compromise our morals for worldly success.

What can we anticipate from you for the rest of 2020 into 2021?

I have a new radio show out with Jeremy Watkins titled ‘Matters of the Heart’ on Grindhard Radio network and 57WLLE.net internet radio. He and I have a lot of other tremendous things on the horizon and in store. I’m finishing up editing my first book and hope to have it released by the end of summer. I’m working on a plethora of other creative projects, messages and more. Because of the pandemic, I had to revision and re-explore my career and dreams with God. I know God is faithful, and I’m thankful for every day that I live and for all of my blessings! Thank you for this interview and for having me.

4 Amazing Actors Who Need To Headline In 2021

Taemin‘s “Pretty Boy” song in my Instagram story was the biggest hint about this week’s article. It is all about the pretty boys of South Korea who are incredibly gifted. There are a host of singers, actors and reality stars that fans are anxious to see in a main role (instead of just the second lead or supporting character). Here are BTSCelebs’ picks for next year.

“Heart Signal 3” cast member In Woo

Early in the series, the engineering manager was a favorite among the ladies in the Channel A dating show. Even though Cheon In Woo may be a rookie when it comes to television, his seemingly down to earth personality and welcomed honesty instantly makes him a fan favorite. I think a short and sweet web series would be the best place for him to start!  I have to admit his ending on Heart Signal makes me very curious about his future plans in entertainment.

Kevin Woo

The former U-KISS member and After School Club host continues to make an impressive name for himself as a solo artist by staying active on social media and landing coveted interviews (with stars like Nick Cannon and Joey Fatone). However, it was his role in the 2015 Naver TV Cast web series “About Love”, that made the biggest impact on me (and you can add “Kevin’s Kitchen”). His love story with LABOUM’s ZN in AB was so sweet. There had to be so much more to the story that could have been shared. His acting was very decent for a rookie, and he needs to make a return to rom-coms asap.

SHINee’s Key (Kim Ki Bum)

After being a longtime fan of SHINee, I think Key is the best dancer and actor in the entire group. They are beyond all talented, but his skills always stood out a little more. For example, he was hilarious the 2016 tvN comedy food drama “Drinking Solo”, while his supporting part in the 2017 MBC action series “The Guardian” was believable.

Seo Ji Hoon

His innate acting skills only seem to improve as the years fly by. I first saw him in the 2018 OCN romance My First Love. Even though he technically landed the starring role, it was only the younger version of the main star. He had to share the part with another person, and in the end it seemed more like the second lead. History continues to repeat itself with many of his dramas since. Seo’s current series , To All The Guys Who Loved Me (Men are Men), his role is 100% lovable and deserves to win the leading actress’ heart. Nonetheless, the only way to secure success is to headline his own romance next year.

I’m hoping these guys land the roles they love in 2021!

[Book Review] DiAnn Mills’ “Airborne”

“The tragedy that had threatened their lives had drawn them together.”

Diann Mills’ upcoming novel “Airborne” is placed under the categories fiction, romance and suspense and it delivers each one effortlessly. From the first chapter, readers are instantly transported to the complicated world of FBI agent Heather Lawrence. She’s headed to Germany while taking a much needed vacation away from her tumultuous marriage. Little did she know, a deviant criminal happens to be one of her fellow passengers.

As the book progresses. readers are exposed to the raw and detailed descriptions of a mysterious germ in flight. Heather is even forced to return to work mode to discover who is behind the heinous attack. Unfortunately, her estranged husband, Dr. Chad Lawrence, is a person of interest, and she becomes a target. Finding the real culprit will prove to be harder than it appears, because the criminal suffers from a dissociative personality disorder. It keeps you guessing until the very end.

“Airborne” is a valiant novel when it comes to suspense. The virus description and action packed scenes are intense. On the other hand, the faith and romance aspects give the book a much needed break. In my opinion, the best part of “Airborne” has to be the main characters relationship with God. Author DiAnn Mills puts a more realistic take on people’s approach to religion, and it’s an appropriate read for people from all religious backgrounds.

“Airborne” is scheduled to be released on September 8th, 2020.

BLACKPINK Crushes The Competition With New Single

Global sensation BLACKPINK impressed the music world yet again by breaking BTS’ YouTube record for the most amount of views in a 24 hour period. Their new song “How You Like That”, which precedes the scheduled studio album release in September, continues to entertain fans with the K-Pop stars’ usual catchy beats and fabulous fashion sense. After only hours online, it has already surpassed 57 million views. I applaud BLACKPINK on their message of empowerment after a breakup and the always evolving choreography. In addition, I would love to see these extremely talented ladies wear vintage ball gowns or even sleek business suits in future music videos.

Check out their latest music video below:

Congratulations to BLACKPINK!
