[Interview] Courtney Walsh: “I Try To Wrap Up The Message Of Grace Into Each Story”

A couple years ago, BTSCelebs reviewed Courtney Walsh’s “Just Let Go”, and I was inspired by the book’s powerful message. Today, let’s meet the New York Times bestselling author who created the book while learning more about her new novel “If for Any Reason”.

BTSCelebs: Who is Courtney Walsh?

Courtney Walsh: I’m a wife, a mom of three (and a Bernedoodle), a business owner, theatre director, and author of contemporary romance and women’s fiction. I love story. There’s so much power in story. I also love coffee (a lot of coffee!), working out, and movies.

What inspired the story behind If for Any Reason?

Before I wrote novels, I worked in the scrapbooking industry. I did it because it was a fun and creative way to tell our stories and to preserve our family’s memories, but also to leave a legacy behind. Think about finding an old letter in your grandmother’s handwriting—there’s just something instantly nostalgic about that. One year, a fellow scrapbooker created a small album and titled it “If for Any Reason.” It was a book of letters for her daughters, just in case there was ever a reason she wasn’t there to tell them all the things she wanted to—she wasn’t taking any chances. That idea has always stuck with me, and it got me thinking . . . what if this was all someone had left of their beloved mother?

You reside in Illinois, but you chose the East Coast’s Nantucket setting. What does Nantucket mean to you?

I’ve been fortunate to visit Nantucket twice, and both times I was completely smitten with it. It’s such a charming, unique place to visit, and the whole idea of being surrounded by water amazes me (especially as someone from the landlocked Midwest). To me, Nantucket is the perfect place to set a romance. Everything about it feels like falling in love.

What similarities and differences do you share with your book’s character Emily Ackerman?

Emily is actually quite different from me. She’s kind of a vagabond, with lots of restless ways. I’m a homebody who would be content to stay right where I am 95 percent of the time. Emily is very boho-chic, inherently fashionable. I prefer my workout clothes. Where we are similar, I think, is that family is important to both of us, and we both tend to be slightly unsure of ourselves. Plus, Emily works in the theatre, and I have a degree in theatre and now own and run a youth theatre with my husband. Emily discovers she loves directing kids too.

What does If for Any Reason tell us about redemption and trusting God?

I think this book deals a lot with forgiveness, as most of my books do. It’s an area that isn’t always easy, but we all need to ask for it and offer it over and over again. I like exploring that, especially exploring the idea that none of us are ever beyond forgiveness and redemption, and that’s something Emily has to learn as the secrets surrounding her mother’s death are revealed.

How did you use your own mother’s wise words to craft letters by Emily’s mom?

Actually, I used my words to my own daughter to craft those letters. My daughter was diagnosed with thyroid cancer when I was writing this book, so a lot of the mother/daughter aspects of this novel are precious to me. Often I would ask myself, “What would I say to Sophia? What would I most want her to know?” And that was a great jumping-off point.

Which character in the book was the most difficult to describe and relate to?

Emily’s grandmother. I mean, as the author, you do have to find a way to relate to every character, but she is the only one who’s the most difficult to relate to. She is the one whose motivations are the most selfish, so it’s hard to sympathize with her.

Has your family read the book? What was their initial response to the story and characters?

Not yet. My mom has—she’s always one of my first readers—and she always tells me she loves my books (even when I ask for honest feedback!). But my immediate family hasn’t read it yet.

How will this book touch nonbelievers?

I always hope that all of my readers will be moved by my novels. The faith journey in my books is always intentionally subtle. I try to wrap up the message of grace into each story because that’s one of the main themes I like to explore. I hope it’s effective. I hope people feel God’s love and are challenged as they’re entertained.

Book Review: Dagny Griffin’s “Shine”

Love is on display!

In March, Dagny Griffin makes her debut with the vibrant children’s book “Shine”. The wonderful, wordless, picture book illustrates the daily life of a cheerful 8-year-old girl named Mia. The lively child is on a mission to show God’s love and share joy to everyone around her. “Shine” shows readers how diligent she prays, reads her bible and encourages the people she encounters. Her infectious joy slowly brings life to the depressed and dreary city.

Whether she is doing chores or showing love to her enemies, Mia never lets anything steal her joy. I feel like children and adults alike can learn so much from this positive story based on the biblical passage Matthew 5:14, which is about Christians letting their light shine in the world. This is a must-see book!

Laura Bobbiesi deserves an honorable mention with the fun and intriguing illustrations she contributed.

“Shine” will be officially released on March 3rd, 2020.

[Interview] Dr. Charles Page: “‘Surrendered Sleep’ Grew Out Of… My Quest For Answers”

Meet Dr. Charles Page!

Healing someone’s body and soul is the ultimate goal of this skilled surgeon. He is on a mission to bring peace into people’s lives despite the dire circumstances that lead them to his medical facility. BTSCelebs was recently given the golden opportunity to interview Dr. Page and learn a little more about him and gain some quality advice to live by.

BTSCelebs: Who is Dr. Charles Page?

Dr. Charles Page: When I explain what I do to people, I tell them, I’m the best guy to see on the worst day of your life. I’m a small-town surgeon in Texas. Most people don’t know I exist until something bad happens. Cancer. A car wreck. The need for emergency surgery.

Being a surgeon is one of the many hats I wear. I’m a husband, a dad, an author, a speaker, a small-business owner and a deacon in my church.

That’s what I do. Here’s who I am. I am a child God, growing in faith and doing my best to cooperate with God as He leads. I’m a work in progress.

What inspired you to write “Surrendered Sleep”?

‘Surrendered Sleep’ grew out of sleep deprivation and my quest for answers. My struggles are multi-faceted: phone calls from the hospital, trips to the emergency room, tough decisions that keep me awake, my own health challenges.

I searched the scriptures for help. In the process, I realized how much the Bible says about sleep and rest. Sleep was God’s idea.

You have a busy schedule as a surgeon, storyteller, father and author. How to you make time for relaxation?

I continue to learn of my need to turn everything off and give it to God. Screens. Worries. Distracting thoughts. When I let go of those things and trust God to do for me what I can’t do for myself—I sleep better.

Humans, unlike most animals, were created to turn off. Giraffes, elephants, deer sleep, on average, three to four hours in a twenty-four cycle. To survive, they must stay alert—around the clock. In contrast, humans sleep about eight hours during the same time period. I believe our sleep-wake cycle reminds us that we need to release control. When we do, we let God do for us what we can’t do for ourselves as we lay down to rest.

What does the Bible say about getting a good night’s rest?

The Bible doesn’t offer any formulas for a good night’s sleep. Instead, it provides a framework for rest which flows out of a growing relationship with Christ.

We often think, God turns off as we lay our heads on our pillows. But the reverse is true. God remains active as we sleep, work in and for us.

The scriptures present several attitudes about sleep and rest. The first is a calm heart. Jesus slept in the bow of ship—in the middle of a storm. Like the Lord, we can turn off and trust God when life’s challenges threaten sleep.

A calm heart knows that God’s providence, protection and provision are working in their lives as they rest. A calm heart practices prayer, meditation and the spiritual disciplines when they lay down to rest.

A wise heart knows that the best way to get a good night’s rest begins the moment we wake up. A wise heart makes sound decisions that set them up for refreshing sleep:

“My son, preserve sound judgment and discernment, do not let them out of your sight; they will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck. Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble; when you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.” (Prov. 3:21-24, NIV).

Sleep flows out of a life filled with wisdom. We need to grow in judgement and discernment in every part of our lives–our health, our relationships, our day to day decisions. Everything affects our sleep.

Here’s a thought to ponder. There are over one thousand sleep disorders. We need to be wise about our health and consult a physician if we are having problems sleeping.

Is there a way to obtain proper rest with a newborn in the home?

An old adage says: “Those who sleep like a baby, probably don’t have one.” Once again, the Bible doesn’t give us a formula. My wife and I have five children. Two of which have left the nest. We sometimes lose more sleep thinking about our grown kids now than we did caring for them when they were babies. Small kids—small problems. Big kids—bigger problems. You’re always going to have something which will try to rob your sleep.

Remember, whatever stage in life you are in—it’s just a season. Babies grow. Time passes quickly. Relish the opportunity you have now with your young children. In Psalm 127 the writer links several principles together–sleep, children and labor: “Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain. In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat—for he grants sleep to those he loves.” (Psa. 127:1-3, NIV).

In your family, in your work and in your sleep, learn to make room for grace. Get in rhythm with your child’s sleep patterns. Here’s four ideas than can help you sleep like a baby—even when you have one:

Sleep, when they sleep.

Give God your to do list and let him work for you as you rest.

Don’t major on the minors. If things don’t get done, then perhaps God didn’t intend for you to do it in the first place.

If possible, build a team so you can take breaks.

What do you hope readers take away from your book?

There is a time to sleep and a time to get up. I want readers to learn to cooperate with God, recognize what He is doing in their lives, grow spiritually and draw upon His resources—awake or sleeping. We’ll get our sleep and activity right when we align ourselves with what God is doing in our lives. Sleep, activity—everything—flows from our abiding relationship with Christ. As we learn to depend on God, he will show us and give us the proper balance of sleep, work and activity.

What other projects should we expect from you this year and the next?

I am promoting my newest book, ‘A Spoonful of Courage for the Sick and Suffering’. These inspirational stories help the ill focus upward and outward instead of inward.

Lord willing, the second book in this series, ‘A Spoonful of Courage for Caregivers’, will come out before the end of 2020. The people who often suffer most are not the sick, but those helping them. They need to be encouraged as well.

I’ve also got three children’s books which will be coming out in 2020, Climbing the Upside-Down Tree, The Lizard in Lizzie’s Gizzard and Fluffy’s Christmas Homecoming.

I also have a podcast which helps those going through a health crisis stay focused on God.

Book Review: T.I. Lowe’s “Beach Haven”

Wishes comes true in Sunset Cove.

T.I. Lowe’s new novel “Beach Haven” brings a raw and realistic love story to life.  Characters Opal Gilbert and Lincoln Cole meet under the most unlikely circumstances at an eccentric resell shop. Opal is the upbeat shop owner, while Cole is a moody ex-soldier with a broken heart and leg, who just happens to be her new employee. It takes an unexpected hurricane and a health scare to bring these two closer together. During their long journey into each other’s hearts, they mingle with family, friends and learn that hard work really does pay off in the end. Opal’s seashell wishes (aka prayers) play a key role in opening Lincoln’s eyes to see the blessings around him.

“Beach Haven” is a sweet love story wrapped in an emotional melodrama. Lincoln Cole’s agony from his war injury takes center-stage, while readers are introduced to the residents of Sunset Cove. I recommend this book to anyone who adores melodramas with a good dose of inspiration. “Beach Haven” is book one in the trio of novels in The Carolina Coast Series.

T.I. Lowe’s “Beach Haven” will be officially released on April 7th, 2020.

[Guest Blogger] Author Robin W. Pearson: “5 Reminders When Forgiveness Seems Impossible”

Robin W Pearson: Remember those days when your parents made you apologize to your sister or brother, even when you hadn’t done anything wrong? “Say you’re sorry. And even if you think you’ve done nothing wrong, tell them, ‘I’m sorry if you think I hurt you.’” The pain you’d inflicted paled in comparison to the agony of mumbling that apology.

But there comes a time when you are the injured party. And it isn’t a swiped toy or a scraped knee in question, but a broken heart, a lost life, or a crushed spirit. Something unreturnable, unfixable . . . unforgivable. You may feel incapable of mustering the oomph to lay on the altar those three words: “I forgive you.” The hurt is simply too raw. The wound too deep. The apology insincere or unspoken altogether.

It may seem at those moments that offering forgiveness will kill you. Yet it’s then that your very life depends on it. Though it feels impossible to break the tight seal on your lips and heart you should consider these five reminders:

You’ve been forgiven.

“But I didn’t . . . ,” “I’d never . . . ,” or “You don’t know what he . . . ,” you might be thinking. True. You’re hurting, agonizing even. This offense seems unforgivable, yet no one is innocent; we all make mistakes. Even you. At some point in the past, someone forgave you; at some point in the future, someone else might not be able to. So get out of line, drop your stone, and offer absolution, “so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins” (Mark 11:25).

What you hold on to will never let go of you.

When you can’t forgive, you grip those hurts and keep them close. You replay the events; all the whys and hows haunt you. Often, the offense grows bigger in your mind, much as yeast dough continues to rise when you leave it in a warm environment. It ferments. Left too long, overproofed dough becomes tough. When you bake it, it has a gummy texture and it tastes acrid. The bitterness of unforgiveness festers and takes root in your spirit. By not letting go of the pain, the pain will soon not let go of you.

That which doesn’t kill us . . . will, eventually.

In A Long Time Comin’, my main character, Granny B, was well acquainted with the ache that just wouldn’t let go, that burden and regret she couldn’t set down. While the original wound hurt, it wasn’t fatal. Yet over time, the bitterness and unforgiveness became the rust upon the sword. And they aimed to take her out long before her cancer. They didn’t stop with killing her own body and spirit but infected her relationships with her family.

Like most people, Granny B wore her life—her suffering—on her face. No more laugh lines. Little joy. The evidence of her hard-heartedness creased her brow, tightened her lips, and burned like fire in her eyes. Emotional and spiritual pain wears down the body and zaps the strength. It attacks you by interrupting your sleep patterns, raising stress levels, and causing or exacerbating other health conditions.

You can’t change what happened, but you can change your response to it.

No, you can’t control the past, but when you remain mired in it, you hand over the keys to the car and direct it to drive you where it will. It colors your relationships by affecting your ability to trust, sways your decisions and makes you second-guess yourself, and hinders your emotional recovery.

Repeating the mantra “The pain will fade” only dulls the ache; it doesn’t heal the wound. True healing requires actively applying a salve of prayer, faith, and yes, forgiveness. Redirect your thoughts and focus on “whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report . . .” (Philippians 4:8). Stop up your ears and ignore the lies that bitterness whispers and shout, “I forgive you!” “I forgive myself!”

Forgiveness is more than a Band-Aid.

It may feel like an alcohol swab when you first apply it, but gradually, forgiveness starts to burn less and soothe more. Mending works from the inside out. It knits together gaping wounds and sure, it will probably leave a scar. Yet this mark represents stronger tissue, wisdom, and experience. Healing. You can’t peel it off and replace it because it’s part of you.

Yes, forgiveness seems impossible at the moment. Right now, you can’t even imagine feeling resentful because you’re still reeling from the shock and anger—from someone’s actions or even your own. But take heart. Instead of planting the seeds of unforgiveness, nurse the promise of Psalm 30:5, which reminds us that the weeping that endures “for a night” is followed by morning joy. And it can last all your days.
