[Interview] 8 Questions with Spooky Generator’s Kyle Kunkler

Last week, Spooky Generator delivered a evocative performance at A&A Ballet’s “Debut”. The skilled group left a lasting impression on the audience as they accompanied Alexei Kremnev’s aesthetic piece, and I’m sure music lovers are dying to learn more about them. Well, BTSCelebs recently interviewed the band’s leader, Kyle Kunkler, to learn more about Spooky Generator‘s past, present and future.

BTSBelebs: Who is Kyle Kunkler?

Kyle Kunkler: I’m a composer, keyboardist, and producer.  I compose for and perform in Spooky Generator.

Who makes up Spooky Generator and what instruments does everyone play?

Kyle Kunkler – Keyboards and electronics

Jake Hawrylak – Bass and effects pedals

Mitch Settecase – Drums and electronics

Why did you guys choose the name Spooky Generator?

I think it originally came from a story a friend told us.  It was an offhand joke at the time about his neighbor’s complete failure to understand how to use a backup electrical generator, but it stuck with us and we started considering it as a band name.  Spooky Generator seemed to be a great name to bring together our interests in electronics and uncanny, fragmented sounds.

Which musicians inspired you to pursue music?

I suppose I don’t entirely know.  There are a lot of musicians that I admire and care about, but I didn’t really get into music to follow in someone’s footsteps.  Music was just a huge source of meaning and comfort in my life, and I realized late in high school that I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else.  Now with hindsight, I can trace backward a bit and see who I’ve borrowed from the most.  I listened to tons of post-rock in high school (bands like Explosions in the Sky) as well as quite a bit of Radiohead.  I fell really in love with Bill Evans and John Coltrane around that time too.  In college, I spent more time listening to classical composers like Penderecki and Stockhausen, and more recently I’ve been completely obsessed with metal and electronic music of all kinds.  Car Bomb was particularly mind-blowing in metal, and in electronic I’ve listened a ton to Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, Laurel Halo, Oneohtrix Point Never, Holly Herndon, DJ Earl, J-Lin…this list could easily get way too large, there are so many amazing composers making music right now.  They didn’t inspire me to pursue music exactly, but their music is the stuff that inspires me to keep making it on a daily basis.

Spooky Generator recently performed at A&A Ballet’s “Debut”, tell us how that came about.

It was actually an idea that Alexei had.  I do some work for A&A as an accompanist.  One day, we were corresponding about something else entirely and Alexei said something like ‘We should meet next week, I have an idea about your band.’  Something mysterious like that.  He suggested this idea of giving me the recordings from the last time they did the piece and having me re-imagine them as a piece for Spooky Generator.  It was a fascinating challenge to bring our style to these classical pieces and try to find some middle ground between them.

Are there any other Chicagoland institutions your band is anxious to perform for?

I guess my mind is just stuck on dance now…we’ve talked a lot about how exciting it would be to work with other Chicago institutions like Hubbard Street Dance.  We’re just really looking forward to more collaborative projects.

Describe your dream tour.

Oh that’s tough.  I can’t exactly pick cities or anything, I would just dream of travelling widely.  Even in the US, the feeling is so different town to town and city to city.  I would love to experience that on a global scale, feel the difference of performing for people in different parts of the world.  Maybe perform in China?  I played in Beijing briefly with a group in college, and the audiences were generous and fun to play for.

There are also dream artists that would just be amazing to meet and tour with.  Oneohtrix Point Never, Holly Herndon, Laurel Halo…I’m just completely repeating myself from earlier I guess.  They’re people I’ve spent a lot of time listening to and admiring.  It would be incredible to actually meet and share a stage with them.

What can we expect from your band this year and in 2019?

We’ve just released a self-titled album.  That’s something that took a lot of effort over the past half-year or so and we’re all really proud of it.  Now that we’ve finished that, I think we’re going to focus on writing and doing some more collaborative work.  Working with dancers was a really exciting opportunity.  It would be great to do more projects in the vein.  I thought these recent projects would wear me out, but I’ve been finding myself inspired and energized instead.  I think you can expect more new music and performances very soon.

[Review] A&A Ballet’s “Debut” was Wonderful

On March 17 in Curtiss Hall, A&A Ballet presented a lovely intimate event (“Debut”) promoting the talent within their well-respected company.

Jane Kelly was a fun and lively host, while Spooky Generator, Red Clay and Ani Gogova brought their signature sound by providing live music. The young dancers were a picture of grace and elegance in a variety of  exquisitely choreographed pieces. Alexei Kremnev‘s “Modern Times”, Madison Falconer’s “Tragedy of the Commons”, Terence Marling’s “Grid”, as well as, masters Nick Pupillo, Preston Miller, Justin Allen’s original work were an absolute joy to watch as their works closely resembled classic paintings come to life. Solo acts like Grace Curry, Dahlia Winters and Gioia Zappani really stood out with their ability to capture the audience with every move. Duo Lee Borowski and Gabriel Hartman challenged us with their complex dance that echoed two individuals interacting and ended with them mirroring each other. From the water scene (aka “bay breeze”) to the interactive human “grid”, there wasn’t a dull moment during the event.

There was a familiar family atmosphere throughout the delicious reception, performance and silent auction. The audience and performers made up a welcoming crowd.

“Debut” gave everyone just a glimpse of the extraordinary work A&A Ballet is capable of. You don’t want to miss their “Cinderella” (May 26) performance when it hits the Studebaker Theatre this spring .“Sleeping Beauty” will make its grand premiere in the same theatre on May 4, 2019.

*BTSCelebs sends a special thanks to A&A Ballet for the invitation to the attend the event.*

Book Review: “Hearts Entwined”

In “Hearts Entwined” – A Historical Romance Novella Collection, authors Karen Witemeyer, Mary Connealy, Regina Jennings and Melissa Jaguars did a wonderful job keeping readers engaged. Each story held its own charm, and they were an absolute joy to read. It’s impossible to choose a favorite short story out of this collection! They are all a must-read.

Here is my summary of the four sweet love stories :

“The Love Knot”

Claire Nevin and Pieter van Duren’s strong bond was instantly shattered by a gross misunderstanding between them. An unexpected baby appearing in Claire’s life reunites the two and forces them to open up to one another. Their already unsteady relationship is put to the test once more when Claire is stricken with a deadly illness.

“The Tangled Ties That Bind”

After five long years, Connor Kincaid returns home to claim Maggie as his bride once and for all. He didn’t anticipate that the teenage girl he left years ago would be pursing a career in medicine in a distant town. As he tries to convince her to run away with him, she opens his eyes to a life where they can serve others. They both discover that life together is more beneficial than singlehood.

“Bound and Determined”

Bradley Wills and Ambrosia Herald’s love story was the most unlikely tale.  As punishment for not following the rules during a recent military mission, Private Willis is sent to escort a former officer and his stubborn daughter across state lines with a caravan of camels. What he didn’t expect to do is fall in love with Ambrosia, while outrunning a group of outlaws set on killing him. Their budding relationships faces unseen challenges that Bradley is the creator of.

“Tied and True”

Heiress Marianne Lister faces possible disinheritance and a life full of hardship if she marries secretary Calvin Hochstetler. To top it all off, Calvin rejects her due to their differences in status. Despite the challenges, she is determined to make Calvin believe she is serious about him, and convince him that she is ready to embrace the simple life. She takes a grueling job at a factory to prove it. It’s only a matter of time before Calvin sees her true heart.

I highly recommend this book to readers of all ages.

Dance Review: The Joffrey Ballet’s “8th Annual Winning Works”

Telmo Moreira’s “Memento Mori” – Photo Credit: The Joffrey Studio Company and Academy Trainees in the 8th Annual Winning Works program. Photo by Cheryl Mann

BTSCelebs was given the special opportunity to review “The 8th Annual Winning Works this weekend. Gifted choreographers Luis Vazquez, Telmo Moreira, Claudia Schreier and Omar Roman De Jesus all showcased a colorful interpretation of their own personal dances.

This year, all the choreographers were tied in their own races for perfection. Their central theme was celebrating diversity and finding one’s voice in a world of conformity. The majority of the performances had more of a modern dance feel than classic ballet. Telmo Moreira’s “Memento Mori” was like watching a trendy music video unfold in front of your eyes, after a tribal theme opening. Luis Vazquez’s “Sea of Comets” and Omar Roman De Jesus’ “BoA” thrived on the active stage that had many different dances occurring at the same time. The latter had more of a dark theme with strong Latin elements, but it showed off wonderful equality in the wardrobe department. I love women and men’s wardrobe to mirroring each other rather than one wearing much less than the other.

I do believe that Claudia Schreier’s “Night Vision” stood out in “Winning Works” with her choreography mixing classic and a slight acrobatics.

“The 8th Annual Winning Works was tailor-made for modern dance lovers and those looking for the ultimate surprise to usher in the Spring. It runs through tomorrow at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago.
