[Interview] “Winning Works 2015” Choreographer Abdul Latif: I’m Interested in Working with Justin Timberlake, Usher and Beyonce

AbdulLatif

Last weekend, I was utterly blown away by Mr. Abdul Latif‘s dance “A Year From Now Ago” at Winning Works 2015. The moving story and dance moves blended so well together; I had to find out more about the talented choreographer behind the dance.

Meet Abdul Latif through BTSCelebs’ exclusive in-depth virtual interview below:

BTSCelebs: What piqued your interest in dance?

Abdul Latif: Works of high production value, that were technically exhilarating and viscerally captivating took hold of me from the start of my earliest remembrances. I saw that in the original film production of Annie, which as a child I watched thousands of times, in the film Flashdance, from first seeing Mr. Balanchine’s Firebird, Mr. Ailey’s Cry and through the dancers “piquing” (no pun intended) around the original fountain on the television show Fame. Each of these and all of them together coalesced in my mind and created a world of wonder that seemed worth everything in my taking the chance to explore what it made me realize was possible in all I was feeling inside.

Is there a particular choreographer you would love to collaborate with?

Most of who I’d love to collaborate with have passed away, the great Bob Fosse and Jerome Robbins. My all time favorite Ulysses Dove would be the ultimate. However, there is Billy Forsythe, Robert Battle and Elliot Feld, but I’d probably more so use it as post-graduate study and that would be less collaborating and more independent-study like. The two that leap to the forefront of my thoughts are more creative and dance directors such as: Jaime King and Baz Luhrmann.

Why did you create “A Year From Now Ago”?

As I was losing my final parent and I watched my Mother lay in the hospital bed and be attended to by nurses and doctors at scheduled times from morning and through the night in a routine like fashion and order, I realized I wasn’t simply watching her pass away. I was watching a ballet be given to me.

How did you decide each step in the dance?

I am big on a preparatory process and vigorously implement workshop rehearsals for my development of the movement and choreographic phrases that either start with me alone in the studio and then involve adding my two artistic associates and rehearsal assistants: Alecia Hill and Nikolas Owens, as well as, other collaborative artists I’ve come up training alongside and enjoying playing with.

Is there a particular stage production or recording artist’s music video you would love to choreograph? Why?

I spent the time just before and during the years of my residency notating a tens of treatments for works I’m prepared to create. I still do it now, there is no end to the excavation of an artistic idea or the development of a new creative epiphany, it was part of what meditatively held me together as I sat in the hospital during the period of my parents passing and now it’s what zen-like releases me from whatever sense of loss creeps in and attempts to make their departures unpleasant. The work grounds me and propels me, and therefore it’s sacred in a way where I don’t really talk about what I’d love to work on until I’ve actually begun working on it. However, seeing how my first professional job was choreographing the Chris Robinson music video Off The Books for The Beatnuts, (Terry Marling of Hubbard Street II played a remix of it during one of my sit ins on his rehearsal – they’re awesome and inclusive that way and he’s just cool cat for being the example he of an artist and professional he is.) but the song and video were a hit and any thing to come up and follow after it in that artistic genre would have to be hot. So…I’ll say Childish Gambino (such a collab would be insanely fun), Justin Timberlake and Usher (I think it’s time we have this Battle Royal between their respective possess, respectfully of course), Miss Beyonce indeed because there is no one like her – PERIOD! And the bands: Gotye, Imagine Dragons and Kings of Leon, because there’s a movement narrative to be told in and through their musical work that would be impactful, groundbreaking and touching.

What do you have planned for the rest of 2015?

There are the operas A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Madama Butterfly that I’ve been approached about doing this summer and the scheduling of are in the works with being finalized. I’m a huge proponent of arts-integration and creative-education based workshops. It is what the other half of my residency time at Lincoln Center was spent studying and developing as part of my post-residency aspirations. Equally it is a major part of what the Rockefeller Foundation got behind and funded beyond that residency tenure period in their fellowship and those “arts-ed” endeavors go into full swing these next two months up and down the east coast from the early child education to the higher education scholastic environments. We’re carefully moving into the next commissions because know even more is being presented and I don’t believe in saying “No”, if it’s something I’m drawn to doing, but everything must have its proper time and due place to be fully envisioned in me, come to a whole realization through the development process and able to present itself as an actuality on the stage, screen or in the music I compose.

I hope Mr. Latif returns to Chicago soon, and choreographs one of the many great productions in the Windy City.

[Interview] 9 Questions with Nickelodeon’s “Make It Pop” actress Megan Lee

MAKE IT POP

Young talent Megan Lee has been apart of the entertainment industry since she was 10 years-old!

She got her start in commercials and TV programs like “iCarly”, Disney short series “Get Connected”, “3 Minute Game Show” and independent films. Her recent YouTube fame propelled her into a K-Pop music career. She debuted as a singer in South Korea with her addictive song “8Dayz” in 2014.

This year, the singer, songwriter and actress will star in an all new Nickelodeon series titled “Make It Pop”. BTSCelebs was given the opportunity to interview Miss Lee to discuss her exciting new role.

BTSCelebs: Who is Megan Lee?

A passionate dreamer! I’m a singing songwriting actress who also loves to dance and express myself! I try to live every day to the fullest and the most positive way possible. I love my job and hope to make people all around the world happy and inspired through my work.

How did you land the role of Sun Hi?

My manager called me and asked if I would be interested in this project. I self-taped an audition, and now I am on this amazing show.

Can you tell us more about Sun Hi’s role at Mackendrick Prep?

Sun Hi is the biggest and loudest dreamer at Mackendrick Prep. More than studying she likes to perform on stage singing and dancing being a part of a popular band called XO-IQ. Sun Hi stands out a lot because of her big personality and colorful funky fashion style.

Will your character have a love interest? If so, who will it be?

As of now, it doesn’t appear so but anything can happen.

Which cast member have you truly bonded with over the course of filming?

On the set of “Make it Pop” both the cast and crew are very close with each other! Rehearsing and filming together has really helped create a bond with my costars Louriza, Erika and Dale.

What is your most memorable scene in Make It Pop and which original song is your favorite?

My most memorable scene is when I almost choked on feathers during a pillow fight for a production number. I was completely fine of course and we laugh about it a lot on set.

This show is based on K-Pop, will any K-Pop stars make a guest appearance on the show besides yourself?

A lot of people have misunderstood that this show is about or based on K-Pop but actually it’s not. The show was created inspired by some of the very colorful parts of the K-Pop industry (outfits and concepts of famous girl groups) which is why the theme of the show is very bright and colorful. We say that the show is K-Pop inspired because some of the styles of hair clothes and make up that we apply to the show by looking at girl groups like (f(x), Girls Generation, 2ne1, 4minute, etc).

So for this season there aren’t actually any K-Pop stars set to make appearances, but it would be so awesome if we had some cool K-Pop guest stars in the future! Although we don’t have K-Pop star guest starring on the show, we have had some really cool guests that will appear on the show this season, so please tune in and watch!

Who is your favorite singer in K-Pop?

I have many favorite singers in K-Pop! But my ultimate favorite is 2NE1!!

I’m a big fan of SHINee and I hope they cross over successfully to the US market like you have. Do you feel young audiences will fall in love with K-Pop after seeing “Make It Pop”?

Because Make It Pop has a bit of K-Pop influence, I think young audiences will definitely have their eyes opened to K-Pop music. Although the show doesn’t surround K-Pop nor is it a K-Pop show, the roots and the inspiration came from K-Pop, so I think that people will enjoy watching something that’s very different from other musical shows on American television.

Way to go, Megan! BTSCelebs is cheering for you.

“Make It Pop” debuts on Nickelodeon next month.

*A Special Thanks to the Nickelodeon press team and Megan Lee for this interview and photo.*

Book Review: Tracie Peterson’s “Steadfast Heart”

TraciePeterson_SteadfastHeart

“Steadfast Heart” isn’t what it appears to be.

The first book in Tracie Petersons Brides of Seattle series mostly follows the story of a red headed orphan named Abrianna. She is determined to never wed and help the needy in the city of Seattle. The story is set in a bridal school in the 19th Century.

The entire book is suppose to be about a rich heiress named Lenore who falls in love with a lawyer (Kolbein) from Chicago, but their story is put on hold for many chapters due to their untimely separation.

I loved learning more about Abrianna, her best friend Wade and the aunts who have raised her practically from birth. However, some of the story was a little confusing, because I expected to read more about Lenore and her relationship with her lawyer.

Nonetheless, the book makes time for murder, suspense and the ultimate search for Kolbein’s sister.

I didn’t like the negative comments about my home city, but the book was an interesting read. I’m actually very curious about book #2.

Review: The Joffrey Ballet’s “Winning Works 2015”

WinningWorks

There is only one word to describe Joffrey Ballet‘s 2015 Winning Works…. Compelling.

Four talented award winning choreographers showcased their complicated pieces to a sold-out crowd at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago,IL today. Choreographer Abdul Latif  and Joffrey Academy Artistic Director Alexei Kremnev’s pieces really stood out among the four intricately constructed dances.

Abdul Latif

Mr. Latif’s A Year From Now Ago told a heartbreaking story and brought out so much emotion in a short amount of time. During his dance inspired and dedicated to Mothers, I wanted to know if the mother was giving birth or having surgery. He made use of the large screen and gave his performance a movie intro. The dancers executed each move and emotion perfectly. A Year From Now Ago was an emotional roller coaster ride that was so worth it.

Mr. Kremnev’s Windy Sand was very uplifting. His dance was carefree and took you to the beach. The dancers seem to imitate the movement of the waves, the wind, and they even tried to evoke the feelings people feel watching a beautiful sunset on a warm summer day.

Jennifer ArchibaldStephanie Martinez

Choreographers Jennifer Archibald and Stephanie Martinez dances were well arranged, but they didn’t tell stories that were as intricately designed as Mr. Latif and Mr. Kremnev. The high energy  and emotions were present, however, I wasn’t as moved by their performances.

The audience was challenged by all four of these complex dances. Each one of them can be considered exquisite pieces of art fit for the Museum of Contemporary Art.

After the show, I even had the opportunity to meet Mr. Latif and compliment him on a job well done. He was very kind and gracious.

Winning Work 2015 concludes its two-day special engagement on Sunday, March 8, at 3PM.

*A special thanks to The Silverman Group and The Joffrey Ballet for giving BTSCelebs the opportunity to review Winning Works.*

BTSCelebs’ Fantasy Casting: Kevin Hart and Lupita Nyong’o in a “Cinderfella” Remake

KevinHart&HartBeatProductions

LupitaNyongo

Kevin Hart and Lupita Nyong’o should be the next Cindefella and Princess Charming.

Last weekend, I saw Jerry Lewis in the 1960s classic film “Cinderfella”, and I thought it is time for a modern remake of this hilarious film. Hollywood hasn’t made any official casting announcement, but I thought it would be fun to put together two stars who would be perfect for the roles.

Now, I haven’t seen Kevin Hart or Lupita Nyongo’s recent films. That detail doesn’t change the fact that Kevin seems to be a talented comedian with loads of energy. Academy Award winner Lupita has that regal air about her that screams Princess.

I couldn’t think of two more perfect people to take on the iconic roles. Hollywood, please consider casting these stars if you plan to remake Cinderfella anytime soon.

Also, please keep it rated G.
