[Interview] Actor Reginald Robinson Jr: “[dirty butterfly Illustrates] What We Do Or Don’t Do Defines Who We Are”

reginaldrobinson-dirtybutterfly

Actor Reginald Robinson Jr has quite an impressive resume. The dedicated actor, who hails from Florida, has found a second home in Chicago among his acting family. “Romeo and Juliet”, “Henry V”, “Run, Chris, Run” and  “Ghosts of Treasure Island “are just a few of the intriguing plays he has been apart of in The Windy City. The Florida State University grad (with a Masters in Fine Arts) is now starring as Jason in Debbie Tucker Green’s “dirty butterfly” at the Halcyon Theatre. BTSCelebs was recently given the opportunity to virtually sit down with Mr. Robinson and ask him a few questions about himself and his new project.

BTSCelebs: Who is Reginald Robinson Jr?

Reginald Robinson Jr: Who am I…I’m a Chicago actor by way of St. Petersburg, Florida. I’m playing Jason in Halcyon Theatre and The Blind Owl’s coproduction of “dirty butterfly”.

How did you get your start in theatre?

I got my start in theatre through American Stage Theatre’s summer camp in St. Pete. My mother enrolled me in it after seeing I had an interest in theatre, sparked by my father who was also an actor.

Tell us about one memorable moment during your very first production.

There have been many memorable moments, but the one that sticks out was during camp when I was Mr. Sylvester McMonkey McBean in Dr. Suess’ “The Sneetches”. In the show, through movement and ensemble presence, we used ourselves as props and set pieces. One of the things we created together was a car that I rode on. As a kid in summer camp it was fun to watch the production come to life without the use of any real props. As I’ve continued my education and career, I see how important the exercise was in laying the foundation for the most basic skill set in this profession.

Name one actor who is the biggest influence on your acting career. How have they influenced you?

Recently it’s been Max von Sydow. Max immerses himself into every role he has played and takes the smallest roles and transforms them into some of the most memorable moments of those movies. To most people his character work precedes his name and that is something to strive for.

Why did you choose to be apart of dirty butterfly?

The “dirty butterfly” script is interesting in the fact that it forces audience members to examine the effects of multiple viewpoints of a scenario. It confronts us with the choice to stand idly by or intervene. What we do or don’t do defines who we are.

Tell us about the character you play.

I play Jason in the show. He’s a caring individual who has been ensnared by voyeurism. I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s a sexual manner, but rather he needs closure to the story of what is playing out on the other side of the wall.

Are there any similarities between the character you play and your own personality?

There are a lot of similarities between Jason and all of us. We’ve all been that neighbor who stands still trying to not make noise while you listen to an argument in your shared hallway. It’s the reason reality tv is so popular. We can now sit on our couch and watch the action through a screen while feeling a few steps further removed .

What projects can fans look forward to seeing you in 2017?

Following “dirty butterfly” I will be in Level 11 Theatre’s “The Library” and the “Forty-Two Stories” with CityLit this spring.

Debbie Tucker Green’s “dirty butterfly” runs through December 10 at the Halcyon Theatre in  Christ Lutheran Church.

Movie Review: UP tv’s “Merry Christmas, Baby”

merrychristmasbaby

“Merry Christmas, Baby” is poised to be a classic.

Actors Malinda Williams, Karon Riley, GregAlan Williams, Chrystale Wilson, DeEtta West, Brad James and Victoria Rowell star in one of the most heartwarming Christmas films of the season. In “Merry Christmas, Baby”, Marci is obsessed with making her baby girl Chandler’s first Christmas as posh as possible. She is convinced her child’s first Christmas/birthday must be celebrated in grand locations  showering her with expensive gifts.

merrychristmasbaby2

When her relatives open their hearts to adopting a precious young girl, her hubby Blair (Karon Riley) and mom (Victoria Rowell) form a new bond over loss, Marci’s eyes begin to open to what is truly worthwhile. It doesn’t matter how much you give during the holidays….it’s how much love you show others that makes the difference. For this lovely family, it’s love for their family and immediate neighbors.

I applaud the cast and crew of “Merry Christmas, Baby” for making a film with such an important message. I actually enjoyed this film much more than the previous ones. The only complaint I have is that the wardrobe was a little risque at times, but the overall movie was wonderful.

Don’t miss “Merry Christmas, Baby” this Sunday at 7PM EST on UP tv.

Movie Review: UP tv’s “Married by Christmas”

marriedbychristmas

It’s “Gilmore Girls” meets “My Best Friend’s Wedding”!

“Married by Christmas” literally mirrored two of my favorite TV shows/movies growing up by incorporating a businesswoman, a controlling deceased relative, a gay guy and loads of girl talk between Carrie and her Sookie St. James-like co-worker.

In the film, Carrie Tate (Jes MaCallan) pretty much goes on a wild goose chase to find a man to marry before her sister (April Bowlby) ties the knot on Christmas. Her grandmother’s will promises her business ownership to the husband of whoever gets hitched first. After 7 dedicated years of working at the family business, Carrie thinks she deserves it, and she is determined to have the company belong to her. Unfortunately, her plans are thwarted when she accidentally asks a gay family friend (Ryan Caltagirone) to marry her, and falls in love with another guy (Coby Ryan McLaughlin).

The concept of this show was lighthearted and fun, but it dragged on a little bit. I would have liked more original twists and turns in the plot and a stellar soundtrack.

Nonetheless, if you want a simple holiday film to watch….without too much drama, this one is for you.

“Married by Christmas” aired last weekend on UP tv.

Canadian Charity Performs Mandisa’s “Overcomer” for Prince William and Duchess Kate

mandisa

Mandisa’s music is reaching everyone!

English royalty witnessed the powerful message of Mandisa‘s music recently during a royal tour of The Cridge Centre for the Family. The Pacific Christian School Choir personally performed one of her hit songs for the Duke and Duchess. Of course, the beloved CCM star shared a video of the event via social media with this sweet message:

“Omigosh😱! Did the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge really just hear Overcomer at The Cridge Centre for the Family by this amazing choir? Whose life is this?!?! What an honor!”

Congrats Mandisa! I wonder if they will invite her to the palace in the near future. Only time will tell.

The Joffrey Ballet and Lyric Opera of Chicago Celebrate the Cubs Historic Win

Posted in Entertainment, News | Tagged , , , , | Leave a comment

[Interview] A&A Ballet’s Alexei Kremnev: “Chicago Is Our Home”

alexei-kremnevAfter a lifetime of dancing, instructing young talent internationally (including here at The Joffrey Ballet), artistic superstars Alexei Kremnev and Anna Reznik decided to open A&A Ballet.

This summer, students came from far and wide to be apart of this groundbreaking new company. A&A Ballet promises to help passionate dancers achieve their goals while becoming trailblazers in the industry.

BTSCelebs was given the opportunity to interview one of the founders, Alexei Kremnev, and learned a little more about this intriguing new dance studio.

BTSCelebs How was A&A Ballet born?

Alexei Kremnev: A&A Ballet and A&A Center for Dance was born on June 6, 2016, but it was conceived a long time ago. The A&A name appeared in 1994, while we both were in Moscow. After all of our experience of successfully building 5 different organizations, it was launched as an independent brand.

Why did you choose the Chicagoland area for your company’s location?

Chicago is our home. We adore Lake Michigan, the seasons and architecture. Location also makes Chicago very convenient for our national and international students.

aaballet

Besides yourself, what kind of choreographers will be training your dancers?

We always have been very selective, but risky at the same time. Intuition plays a very important role. I would like to see a more original approach for every company so each company looks very different. Personalities and qualities of our dancers also will play a big role in who we are going to work with.

There are many talented young choreographers who need to be recognized, supported and given a chance. This season we are working with talented Justin Allen and Ronn Stewart.

Tell us about one dancer you worked with in the past that actually inspired you. How did they influence your work with rookies?

We had a great education ourselves, that’s why we truly believe in its value and would like to continue to invest our energy and knowledge in helping the young generation. Among the legendary teachers I studied with, there are two who influenced my teaching philosophy the most. Eleonora Vlasova was a great ballerina and a laureate of the Paris Academy of Dance Award for her achievements in ballet, and German Pribilov, who studied with the great Alexander Pushkin, a teacher of Rudolph Nureyev and Mikhail Baryshnikov. They taught me to have a lot of patience and have an individual approach to every dancer.

What Hollywood movie would you love to recreate into a ballet for the Chicago stage?

aaballet

There are two in my mind. I always loved “Some Like It Hot”. It’s a perfect, very classy comedy with so much American flavor and texture. I also would like to make my “Coco + Igor” a little bit longer. The theme of Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky’s lives makes it an absolute unique material to study. I’m very attracted to that period in the Arts and History. Our “Urban Nutcracker” will partially take place in Chicago of 1930 and then transform into the future, but we’ll talk about it later…..

If you could choose one musician (American or foreign) to play live music during your performances, who would you choose and why?

Herbert Von Karajan and Frank Sinatra.

What should we anticipate from A&A Ballet in the coming year?

We have had a wonderful start. The Youth Company, pre-pro program, intensive seminars bring so much joy, appreciation, energy and also future plans. We’ll continue to develop our “Children’s Series”  bringing our “Cinderella”, “Pinocchio”, “Peter Pan”, “Sleeping Beauty”.

“Urban Nutcracker” will take place in 2017. We are very open minded, creative and flexible with our approach to every project, but have very strong core educational values and vision. Devoted to Youth, we’ll try to make Dance education as important as all other forms of the Arts, and also proudly represent Chicago in a world of international dance

If you want to learn more about this magical new dance company, visit A&A Ballet online (aacenterfordance.org).
